Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Che Askew. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Che, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
It all started from YouTube. I fell in love with a series of musicians making music on YouTube in the early 2010’s. Since then I wanted to learn how to make music from song writing, to production and audio engineering.
The hardest obstacle was lack of resources. I come from a single mother with 5 kids so money wasn’t plentiful. I learned how that hurdle is easily overcome with hard work and people skills. Overtime I’ve gained opportunities learned new skills and continuously practice and hone the craft.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
’m Che Sanchez—a musician, audio engineer, illustrator, and storyteller. My creative journey began in the early 2010s when I discovered musicians on YouTube and realized I wanted to learn it all: songwriting, production, and audio engineering. Growing up in a single-mom household with five kids, resources were limited, but I quickly learned that hard work, determination, and strong relationships could help me overcome any obstacle. Through years of practice and hustle, I developed my craft and never looked back.
I wear many hats. As a recording artist, I’ve released tracks like OPT and Taken From Me—the latter was nominated as a Top STL Track. I’ve gained over 70,000 streams across platforms, built a community around my music, and continue to grow organically. As an audio engineer, I collaborate with artists to bring their projects to life, from mixing to creative direction. I’m also an illustrator, creating visual art to accompany my stories and music, and I’m part of the band D.O.U.G., where we create music that’s personal and raw.
What I offer is more than just music or art. I create experiences that resonate deeply with people. Whether through a song, a visual piece, or a collaboration, my goal is always to deliver something honest and impactful. What sets me apart is my authenticity and versatility—everything I create comes from a place of passion, integrity, and a desire to connect with others.
I’m most proud of staying true to myself throughout all my projects, and I’m driven by a mission to make work that makes people feel seen and heard. If you’re discovering me for the first time, know that I’m here to build something meaningful, and I’m always pushing to create art that connects, lasts, and inspires.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew more about grants and scholarships earlier on for musician’s. It would have spared me some frustration but also I like how things turned out.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to make music and write stories that will give me the ability to buy a house and provide stability to my entire family.
