We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Che Antonio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Che below.
Che, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has been my most recent musical project. I collaborated with some amazing and talent friends of mine to create my first EP composed of songs I wrote during quarantine. This down time, like for many of us, allowed me to look inward and process things I had never processed before as they came into the forefront of my awareness. This led me to process them in writing and composition, starting a new musical patch for me as an artist.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was 18, I was part of an MTV reality series called “Making Menudo” in which I auditioned to be part of the legendary latin group MENUDO. I received a record deal with Sony BMG/ Epic Records and toured the world. I later joined latin trio GRUPO TREO and our album was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2016 for “Best Tropical Fusion Album”. I recently started my solo project, and have released a number of singles since. Currently, I am releasing my EP on a singles basis, sharing the songs I wrote during quarantine.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The story I had to unlearn was that NO ONE is going to do things for you, you have to do them for yourself. I started my career signed with a mayor label, where administrative responsibilities and processes were done by the label team. Starting my solo career, I had to unlearn to just be the artist that performs, and and had to learn that no one is going to the the work for me, but myself.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I started my solo project, I was releasing music that I wasn’t really feeling and didn’t feel like my authentic self. Although this was a feeling that I strongly felt, I pushed it aside to stay focused on the rhythm and demands of making and releasing new music on a constant basis. I told myself, “this style of music has worked before so just keep going!”. I later accepted that the direction and intention behind my music was not coming from a place of authenticity or from my true creative spirit, rather from a place of doing what I believed others expected from me.
This allowed me to stop everything that I was doing, take some time off from making and releasing music, and do some shadow work within myself. Of course I had the voice in my head telling me that I was “wasting time”, but my higher self voice was always there to put be back into doing the work and being patient with the process of self healing and self realization. Two years went by, and I found myself confident and proud of the music I had been composing during that time. The songs were raw and honest, and reflected me as my true self.
