We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chaz D’Avino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chaz, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Starting up “Chazzy Productions” at first was definitely a big risk. I just got fired from my 9 to 5 job at the time and I had no source of income coming in. It was I either find another 9 to 5 job to work for, or just believe in myself and start promoting my film company to new people. Of course I took the film route and took the risk to work for myself. I always wanted to be my own boss. I always wanted to work on my own time and not have someone above me telling me what to do. I refused to be bossed around by someone any longer and I took a leap to getting my film business off the ground.
Time went on, and this turned out to be the best decision of my life. I got clients pretty fast and enjoyed shooting videos a lot. I put the quote “Enjoy what you do, and you will never work a day in your life” into existence. It was the best feeling ever knowing that I had a talent I can use to provide for my family and I. It was also the best feeling knowing that I would never have to clock into another job never ever again!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
It all started from editing dance video’s as a kid. Overtime I became really good at editing. Knowing how to edit makes your videos stand out a lot more compared to other videographers and I definitely used that to my advantage.
Whenever someone wants their video to stand out they come to me. It’s a great feeling knowing that a client trusts me with their vision. I never let them down and that’s why they come back over and over again!
How did you build your audience on social media?
The most important thing is to just be yourself. Post photos/videos of what you actually like to do, your real hobbies. For me, it was videography. So I would just keep posting behind the scenes footage of me shooting and editing videos. After I got a small following I then started posting videos with YouTube links to back up the behind the scenes post. Before I knew it, I had my first set of clients that needed me multiple times.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best new clients for me have been wedding couples. They are always nice and less stressful to communicate with compared to working with a client for a music video. They also appreciate the work I do a lot more compared to others by giving big tips.
