We recently connected with Chauncie Perkins and have shared our conversation below.
Chauncie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability for my makeup business in an over saturated market is actually more so effective resource utilization/ actually tracking revenue and losses properly.
As I’ve grown through the years in my business, one thing I’ve learned is, it’s more than just getting clients, retaining clients and making money. A part of that picture also entails buying product, the overhead cost, and what you’re actually profiting after dividing that by how many people you can service per 1 bottle of foundation, toner etc.. or 1 palette of eyeshadow.
I am learning everyday how to properly track my resource utilization as well as my revenue & losses.
It’s all such a beautiful thing because struggling and learning in your business always benefits you. You learn as you go, and figure out what works best for you all while going through this beautiful mess.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Chauncie Perkins, I am a makeup artist also known as GlamByChauncieP born and raised in Kansas City, MO. Ever since I was a young girl, I was really big into art & my creative side. I knew at a young age I either wanted to be a part of the fashion industry or the beauty industry as a career. Working a 9-5 just wasn’t all I saw for myself.
I began high school and would use myself and my friends as muses for my creative ventures. At this point, I was doing nails, makeup, and hair in our locker room, or even sometimes during class. I was most passionate about makeup & began practicing more and more. Once I completed high school, I attended Kansas State University where I studied Apparel Marketing with an emphasis on Entrepreneurship.
While attending K-State, an up-and-coming school fashion magazine “Manhappenin” asked me to join their creative team as a makeup artist for all of their shoots. I quickly said yes. This was one of my first big opportunities to showcase my talent! Although I loved my college experience and the opportunities that had been presented to me, I did not feel completely fulfilled in my makeup ventures and began to seek out opportunities back home in Kansas City, that could help me progress and elevate my skill set.
I found an apprenticeship opportunity through another makeup artist I would work with whenever I was back home on breaks or had any downtime while in college. This apprenticeship was located at The Pretty Bar which was in Downtown Kansas City. I came home from school and decided to begin investing in my makeup career by attending the apprenticeship at The Pretty Bar in 2019. I completed the apprenticeship and became fully certified as a makeup artist that same year.
I worked at The Pretty Bar from 2019to 2022 until they closed their location down. While working there, I was able to grow as an artist, as a businesswoman and was able to increase and expand my clientele.
I am now located at Mpressive Minks Beauty Bar, a beautiful lash bar located in Independence, MO where I plan to continue my makeup journey. I am also currently enrolled in an Esthetician Program at Summit Salon Academy, located in Independence, MO. I will be graduating from my program in May 2023. Following graduation, I plan to obtain a position at a luxury spa working as an esthetician specializing in skincare and waxing in the Downtown Kansas City area.
Making others feel good and enjoy the skin they’re in, is my purpose. There is a very famous quote by Maya Angelou that states “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I live by this quote! My goal in my career is to continue to make my current clients as well as my future new clients feeling good. To be a good feeling, a safe place and a healing place for people is what I am here to do, and ultimately what will set me apart from competition.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media is one of the MOST important marketing tools in the 21st century. Your presence online is how most of your clients will get to know you initially before even getting to meet you in person.
I researched how much social media affects your business and found some interesting facts. 75% of internet users use social media to research brands according to Data Reportal, 2022.
I try to make sure that i post at least 5-6 times a week for content and promotion purposes. Typically when I post more and stick to these numbers, I notice an increase in booking rates/sales. Simple things like posting on social media can easily increase sales for your business.
I am continuously learning to stay on top of my social media presence, continuously being cautious of what i say and how i present myself on the internet as that also affects my sales and business persona.
If i had any advice for a new business owner, it would be everything i just stated above. I’ve learned the significance of social media.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honestly over time, what helped me build my reputation in my market was word of mouth & Social media. A lot of people knew me & the services I offered because my clients were Iiteraly walking advertisement! Thankfully I have clients that will spread the word and openly share my information with those who inquire. Social media as mentioned in the question/response above has been a tremendous help in helping me to establish and maintain a report and reputation with my clientele.
