We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chasity Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chasity thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Yes, I feel like vacations are necessary. As humans, brain breaks are required to revamp and refresh when needed. “You work hard so you can play harder.” is a quote I live by daily and take literally. I feel like as long as you don’t get sidetracked and caught up in the fun of vacations they’re always a key factor in success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Chasity Jones and I’ve been in the clothing industry for over 6 years now. Starting out, I had no idea I’d be as big as I am now. I’ve taken a LOT of losses and had to learn thoroughly from experience with the losses. I’ve been able to teach many people my craft, as well as learn a lot from other business owners and YouTube. I pride myself in the quality I provide and the ability to maintain retention with my customers. I’m proud that I stayed resilient even though I wanted to give up many times because of how hard it has been to keep up with the forever-changing trends. If I could offer one piece of advice to someone looking to start a clothing business, I’d like to tell them that even when it’s tough, YOU GOTTA KEEP GOING. It’ll all pay off and you’ll always have something to look back on and be proud of.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before the peak of Covid-19, my long-term job sent everyone letters informing us that we’d shut down with no clear idea of when production would start back. Of course, I was comfortable because I had been there 4 years with no backup plan or even a clue about a company as big as the one, I worked for shutting down. My mind went into overload trying to figure out what my next plan was. I’ve always been crafty, and masks were the most popular craft at the time, as they were mandated for everyone. I watched a few tutorials and started to learn how to make masks and began customizing them with monograms and football teams. I made so many masks that I decided to donate to caregivers in my community and was featured on the news, this was probably one of my most memorable moments in the history of being a business owner.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that just because someone is related or a “friend” to you doesn’t mean they should get discounts. It takes a LOT of money to successfully run a business. & before I started they were happily paying someone else exactly what they charged without complaints.
