We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chase Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chase, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Starting a business was something very new to me. Considering that I’m also currently teaching music at an elementary school, I wasn’t sure if I would even have the time. One day while I was working summer school, I was on my phone during a break and I saw this ad for sound healing courses. Out of curiosity I did some research into what sound healing consists of. It felt right to just jump in and register for courses and now I feel like I’m in my right calling. Helping people is something that I’ve in for a long time and to now have a platform to do so on my own terms is so exciting!
Starting a holistic wellness business was intimidating at first; mainly because there are many people that don’t know what sound healing is or may have a misunderstanding about it due to their religious views. Much of this year and last year has been participating in events as a vendor and educating others about sound healing and how it may benefit their wellbeing. I’ve had the chance to meet some very awesome people as well as make some business connections along the way.
Another big issue with starting a business was finding a space to host my practice. I wasn’t sure on whether or not to find a space of my own or rent a space for once a month events. I put finding a space on the back burner and focused more on booking in-home sessions as well as special events. However, many people that I spoke to at events have shared something that struck me: many people’s stress comes from their own homes. This put more fire under my feet to find a space where people can truly relax without being surrounded by stressors. Some spaces were office spaces that were concerned about the noise. Other spaces were just too expensive for someone just starting. Luckily I found a salon suite that’s in my price range and has just what I need to get started.
The advice that I would give to anybody who is thinking about starting their own business is essentially just go for it. What we may think is not a good idea is just what people need from you. Don’t be afraid to share your gift with the world. You never know who you might encounter that needs what you’re offering.
Here’s a big one: ASKING FOR HELP IS NOT A BAD THING. Starting a business can be overwhelming even for those with a full staff and the resources that they need. One thing that I do love about social media is the ability to join groups that are in the same profession as you. I often trade tips with other sound healers around the world and I’ve learned so much about business elements that I didn’t even think about!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Chase Lee, a sound healer, music educator, and flutist based in Memphis, TN. My journey into sound healing is deeply rooted in my background as a musician. I graduated from Texas Southern University with a degree in music and spent years as a music educator and a period of time as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) working with neurodivergent individuals. Through my experiences, I witnessed firsthand the power of sound and vibration in transforming emotions, reducing stress, and fostering deep relaxation.
That realization led me to create SOUNDSAGE, a sound healing practice that blends my expertise in music, mindfulness, and holistic wellness to help people find balance, peace, and healing through sound. I offer sound healing therapy sessions as well as copper jewelry, gemstone accessories, and handmade soy candles.
I’m proud of how SOUNDSAGE has evolved—not just as a business but as a healing space for individuals and communities. I love that I get to utilize sound healing in my classroom on occasion. In a city like Memphis, providing kids with mindfulness techniques is something that I take very seriously. My practice is open to all ages (animals, too), but I would love to have more opportunities to provide sound therapy experiences to young people; especially in underserved communities.
One of my biggest milestones was working with a program called Mending Hearts. It is an annual performing arts camp for children who have lost one or both parents. Providing sound healing sessions for them was truly an amazing experience and it really did good for my morale in this space. In May, I am scheduled to provide a sound healing session for new and expecting mothers. I can’t wait to share this experience with others during their most exciting time!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Using social media as a method of advertising and outreach has been a very useful tool. Navigating these platforms for business use is totally different from personal use. Luckily, there are so many tools built-in to help spread the word about your brand and the work that you do.
Participating in local events as a vendor has also been a great method of building my business reputation. I get the opportunity to speak to so many people from different walks of life about sound healing and how it may help them. Those are the most fun!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The courses that I took to become a certified sound healer included a wealth of information from holistic business owners. I had the opportunity to participate in live sessions with other sound healers that are doing great things in this space. Many of them offer other services such as yoga and various therapies. This gave me the push that I needed to always think outside the box and operate not just as a healer, but as a business person.
