We recently connected with Chase Kreitzer and have shared our conversation below.
Chase, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Since we are on a smaller scale, we don’t buy our ingredients in huge bulk quantities. Instead, we’re grocery shopping 2, 3, sometimes 4 times a week gathering different cheeses, meats, etc. from various markets and stores so everything stays extremely fresh! We make all of our charcuterie boards to order and are able to tailor more to our customer base to fit their needs. We participate in various markets throughout the year which allows us to interact with the community on a more personable manner than a corporation may be able to. Lastly, we take pride in being creative and unique with each board we curate, so although some may look similar in style, no two are identical and the cheese selection is constantly rotating.

Chase, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When A Pretty Picnic came to me, I was at a point in my life where I was kind of wondering what I was going to do for a career. Right out of high school, I had thought I was going to be a firefighter/paramedic. I went through schooling and worked as a firefighter/EMT for a few years and although I enjoyed the job and what it meant to hold that title, it didn’t feel like the right fit. I then phased out of that path and phased into Costco Wholesale. I had gone back and forth for a while on whether I wanted to try and work my way up the ladder there or be content with where I was. After 4 years there, I had settled on contentment, or so I thought. It struck me when I was at my friends get together and she had laid out a spread of food and treats for everyone fit to the theme of the party. Charcuterie came to me then. I couldn’t think of any charcuterie companies in the area and I felt there could be a need for carefully crafted cheese boards. It was more the artistic aspect of it that pulled me in than the cheese itself, though. I’ve always dreamed of having an artistic hand but never had much luck with drawing or painting. Food, however, I very much enjoy working with. We started with making charcuterie boards and we wanted to stand out so we also have made homemade jams since we’ve started. Our boards are available year round on our website with a 48 hour notice, we offer beautiful grazes for large events/guest counts, and we participate in markets where we have a much more extended menu containing sourdough bagels, salads using local lettuce, and more homemade goods. Our dream is to open a cafe in the coming years where we will still offer charcuterie as well as an abundance of other delicious homemade foods and coffee.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
As a fairly new business of 3 years, most of our clients up to this point have been new. However, this year we’ve been able to start seeing a better picture of new and returning customers and I would say the best source for new clients, are our old clients. We began selling our charcuterie snack boxes at farmers markets or various pop up markets which exposed us and our brand to the community or city we were able to be set up at. We believe we have a great product that consistently delivers quality and our hope is that our customers see that as well and share us with their friends and family.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Attention to detail and quality. We hand pick each blueberry that goes into our charcuterie, taste test everything, and always keep it fresh. One of the best things about charcuterie is there are hundreds of ways to make it beautiful so each curators style will be different. Aside from our charcuterie, most of what we offer such as sourdough bagels, jams, protein balls, salads, and desserts are homemade, local, or have a homemade element to them.
