We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chase Conner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chase, thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents let me be me. And I know it sounds weird but they never stepped on who I wanted to be. No matter if that wasn’t who they wanted. Once my mother knew I loved music, and old music like frank Sinatra she would buy me all his albums. Or when I got into hip hop she got me a lil Romeo CD. She was always letting us be artist.
Chase, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a musician and content creator on Tik Tok focusing on the issues of lack of black representation in K-pop or Korean popular music. It’s a genre of music largely built by black people and black music but we are not in it. I don’t think it’s right and I strive to be a voice.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built a following just being honest and not being afraid to say what was on my mind. Didn’t matter if it was a joke or a fact, everything is honest and people know that about me.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started out as a music blogger but I didn’t love it. I did it because I knew it was a great way to network but I honestly didn’t like it at all. So I made the choice to stop covering music and start making it. I took a year to learn how to make music and it was super weird and awkward for a moment but it’s turning out okay.
