Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charoné DeShazier. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charoné, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
What started as just a hobby, has blossomed into not only something that I am extremely passionate about & proud of, but also a full blown business. It was late 2021 when I took interest in jewelry making with polymer clay and before I realized it, a once a hobby, had now turned into a way to for me to express my thoughts that couldn’t otherwise be articulated through words.
The more I created, the better I became. The better I became, the more I noticed the all of the possibilities available to express myself through this handcrafted art. I began to share my pieces with friends, family and at various pop-up events that I participated in. Once I started to see the responses and admiration of my pieces, it was then I realized that I not only found something that I was again passionate about, but there were others that shared the same feeling! In September of 2022, Enorah Jewelry was officially formed. It has been a little over 8 months since I making that step, and when I look back at how far I’ve come, the feeling is surreal.
Enorah Jewelry has come so far in what feels such a small amount of time. My pieces have been featured on the news and are located in two shops in Sacramento, California as well. With a third location in Southern California n the works currently . So keep an eye out!!
My brand has unknowingly become a symbol of beauty & self-care, and I so proud of how far it has come.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It all actually started as just a hobby back in late 2021. As a break from another former hobby turned business, I wanted to find something that I was equally interested in learning and creating, and that was when I discovered the world of clay making. I was still working during this time, and was in a place where I needed to find something that would serve as a break from my regular job, that is when I started making earrings with polymer clay. The more I played with different techniques and learning how to work with the clay, the more I fell in love with it. Although it did not flourish as I had wanted it to, as I did not have the time to invest during that time, my first hobby turned business showed me that having your own business, while stressful at times is one of the most exciting feelings.
So as I kept practicing, mastering techniques and honing in on this new skill of clay making, I realized just how much I was falling in love with it and that it provided a sense of relaxation every time I sat down to create a new piece.
It was somewhere during this that I made the decision to step away from my full-time position as a Registered Veterinary Technician and move to a relief role so that I would be able to dedicate the time I was not able to with my first business, into this new venture. The more time and effort I put into my pieces, the more unique and beautiful they became, and it was beginning to get noticed by others. In September 2022, Enorah Jewelry was officially made into a business.
It is a crazy thought to think how far I have come with my business, especially in a niche that is so very saturated. But what I think sets me apart from others is a few things; The most notable being my designs. I only make one of one, small batch, unique designs and color combinations. I try to keep a sense of exclusivity for my customers so that they know that the product that they are wearing are truly made with passion and care and they won’t see a thousand of them out and about. They are one of the lucky few to have that Enorah Exclusive. Also, with that, my personality. It shows in my art and people have taken notice, and appreciate the transparency and authenticity.
It feels like the longest journey ever, but in reality it has been a relatively short time. To think of all the milestones my business has accomplished is mind blowing. There are so many things that have taken place, but what makes me most proud of being a business owner is managing to have my pieces in two separate shops in Sacramento, as well as being featured on the news last summer. Now, I’m being interviewed by VoyageLA. Its wild!!! The things that come from determination and not giving up. I have no idea exactly what the future holds for Enorah Jewelry, but I do know it is something good. You know when you can just feel it, and can’t shake it? Yeah, its just like that and I cannot wait to see what’s next!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lessons I have learned as a small business owner is that not everyone is going to understand you or buy your product, and that is okay! For every “no” that you receive, five more people waiting to say yes are right behind them. I learned this from the many, many events I have participated in since beginning this journey in 2020 with my first business. It used to sting a little when I would get individuals that didn’t understand my journey or process so they didn’t see the value in what I was creating. But I quickly learned that while Enorah Jewelry was meant for everyone, everyone is not meant for Enorah Jewelry and that is okay as well.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is my unique, one of a kind pieces as well as my transparency. I always keep my interactions real and organic when I meet new people and it has allowed me to keep a fairly loyal following and amount of returning customers.
