We were lucky to catch up with Charmaine Rogers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Charmaine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
Establishing my own business has been one of my most rewarding investments, albeit with initial challenges. In the early stages, I recall the struggle of attracting clients, prompting collaborative brainstorming sessions with a fellow entrepreneur. Initially focused solely on hair braiding, my venture gradually diversified to include hair accessories, fedora hats, and clothing. Procuring reliable vendors proved to be a daunting task, as I navigated this aspect independently. While some were privy to the process, reluctance to share insights prevailed. Over time, I realized the correlation between dedication and success, prompting the launch of a comprehensive website within the inaugural year. This platform facilitated bookings, showcased my portfolio, garnered reviews, and enabled online purchases. Witnessing the steady growth of my enterprise has been immensely gratifying, with ample opportunities for further expansion on the horizon. Crafting my own workspace has afforded me a sense of autonomy and fulfillment, fostering meaningful connections with diverse clientele, including children. Through my business, I’ve seized opportunities to both inspire others and be inspired in return.
Charmaine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My entrepreneurial voyage commenced as a self-taught braiding stylist, fueled by a passion nurtured since my high school days. Although my initial academic pursuit was in criminal justice at a local college, my true calling in hair services became evident. In 2020, amidst the pandemic’s uncertainty, I courageously transitioned from my job to pursue hairstyling full-time. Over the ensuing three years, my business diversified to encompass bespoke accessories, hats, jewelry, and apparel. Undoubtedly, I attribute all achievements to divine guidance. God has continuously orchestrated unexpected opportunities along my path, and I am humbled to declare my steadfast commitment to entrepreneurship over the past three years. The journey since 2020 has been anything but smooth. As a single parent of four children, I encountered numerous obstacles. Nevertheless, I refused to let adversities dampen my resolve. Launching my venture sans loans or grants, I invested personal resources despite initial uncertainties about client acquisition.
I attribute a significant portion of my success to my sincere affection for people. In my line of work, establishing connections with clients, particularly children, holds paramount importance. Cultivating a secure, uplifting, and affectionate atmosphere is pivotal in nurturing enduring relationships and fostering client loyalty.
Yet, with unwavering faith, divine providence consistently illuminated the way forward, for which I am eternally grateful.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey with a leap of faith during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 while employed as a front desk receptionist on Jekyll Island. The rapid spread of the virus, coupled with the risks involved in interacting with guests from diverse global backgrounds without proper safety measures, compelled me to make a decisive choice to safeguard my family’s health. Recognizing the importance of taking proactive steps, I tendered my resignation and utilized my final work paycheck along with my savings to kickstart my venture. Amidst the challenging circumstances, I diligently pursued the necessary legalities, obtaining both my LLC and business license. In August 2020, I proudly launched my business, relying solely on personal funds without assistance from loans or grants. Launching my business required me to reassess and break away from some of my spending habits. The initial phase was challenging, with limited income flowing in. Despite this, I remained responsible for caring for my four children, necessitating careful decision-making to ensure success.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Google Reviews served as one of my most effective channels for attracting clients from various locations. A significant portion of my clientele discovered me through Google, drawn to my website and the positive feedback shared on my Google reviews. Additionally, a considerable number of visitors to the area stumbled upon my business through Google and sought my services during their stay. Moreover, I’ve had the privilege of serving numerous military clients who found me via Google. I highly advocate for establishing a presence on Google and encouraging clients to leave reviews, as it can significantly enhance visibility and attract a diverse clientele.
