We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charly Yzaguirre a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think to be successful it takes a lot of determination and knowing that you can do it. Not letting anything or anyone bring you down. Everyone is going to have set backs but you can’t let those set backs keep you from going forward and making your dreams come true. You have to use those as lessons and just keep going.

Charly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a home baker for about 8 years. I started after I went to a cake decorating class with my mom and I fell in love with it. I would stay up till about 3 in the morning watching YouTube videos to learn different techniques and how to work with fondant. I wanted to learn everything I could. My first big cake was actually for my daughter’s third birthday. It is still one of my favorites. Since then I have grown to offer different custom items and different flavors. I now offer custom cookies, pretzels, rice crispy treats, and much more. I love doing what I do and seeing the excitement when people pick up their orders. It makes my heart so happy to know that I could help make their event that much more special. I love that I have customers who will give me a theme and say they completely trust me to design it. There is no better feeling than to know they trust your abilities and know that you will come up with something they will love. I am my biggest critic so if I don’t think it’s something I would be happy with I will not send it out. I will redo a cake before I send it out if I don’t think it’s to the best of my abilities. The most important thing for me is for my customers to be 100% happy with what they order,
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative with my work is the look on my customers faces when they see their cake or cookies. A lot of the times it’s moms who are picking their child’s birthday orders and they get so excited. It makes me smile from ear to ear to know someone loves something that I created. You know a lot places make cakes and it’s just something they do but to me each order is something I put my heart into because I want it to be something special. I want the things that I make to make to make that lasting impression and be that special part that they remember years later.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My best source for new clients has honestly been through Facebook and word of mouth. I have been building my page on Facebook for the last 8 years and I am getting new customers all the time. At first it was just family and friends but as time has gone on it’s been people who have heard about me or have just looked up home bakeries on Facebook. I try to promote on local Facebook pages and the market place to get new customers as well. I’ve had friends and family who will share the pictures I post or people who have ordered from me will sometimes tag me in the pictures they post. To me it’s making the best impression on your customers and they will recommend you to their friends and family, who will then recommended theirs.
