Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charlotte Oliva. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charlotte , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
In 2017, I held various roles at a small SEO firm, including operations director, marketing manager, and project manager. The company prioritized profit over client satisfaction, often neglecting to provide personalized solutions for our clients. Recognizing this gap, I began devising a strategy to offer bespoke marketing services to local brands. My aim was to ensure these services could be implemented and managed efficiently, and repeatedly. My goal was to become a facilitator for these brands, helping them achieve their objectives in a more streamlined, feasible, and realistic manner. I presented the idea to the owner of the small SEO firm and I was met with negativity and disgruntled comments about how quantity over quality was more important for business. I profusely disagreed and was frustrated we were servicing clients without thinking about what they wanted. With that, myself and another coworker took our ideas and started building a small marketing agency brand called Evolved Thinking Digital and found 2 local brands who were interested in taking the next experimental steps with us.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began my professional journey in Public Relations and Event Management, where I got a taste of marketing, web development, campaign creation, and project management. The process of bringing campaigns to life and witnessing their interaction with audiences, along with observing the resulting impact, was particularly fascinating to me. Over time, my interest shifted towards the psychological aspects of marketing, exploring how various campaign elements like wording, colors, and engagement techniques resonated with audiences. To deepen my understanding in this area, I delved into the study of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This education equipped me with insights on how to effectively tailor language for specific marketing purposes and comprehend diverse responses to various marketing methods and styles.
This approach has been instrumental in enabling me to craft distinctive strategies while assisting clients. It plays a key role in various aspects, such as developing their brand identity, orchestrating marketing campaigns, designing websites, or revamping their market engagement tactics.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Towards the end of 2017 we started the business with a deep passion to help guide and build unique marketing strategies for brands, but we had no idea how we were going to grow our client base. We started the business with 2 clients who took a chance on us to help build their marketing, from there we started attending local events, networking events, farmers markets, award ceremonies and trade shows with the idea of pitching our services.
In the early days, our most significant breakthrough came when we responded to a tweet from a local Cannabis tradeshow organizer in need of social media and marketing assistance. Our witty response, coupled with a link to our website, immediately secured us the project. To leverage our position, we offered our services for free as long as we were able to market our services to all 150 local vendors. . We introduced “event marketing” services to assist vendors in gearing up for the tradeshow. This strategy proved to be a turning point, significantly boosting our business.
Following this success, our client base began to flourish, largely through referrals and continued work from past clients.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
After 4 years working with my business partner, gaining clients and growing our local presence, my business partner had the opportunity to head to California to study for her masters degree.
This was a time of mixed emotions for me; I felt both immense pride and excitement for her new academic endeavor, yet it also brought me to a realization. The future of our business now hinged on my decision to either continue solo, facing the challenge of handling the responsibilities of two people, or consider an alternative path. I decided to keep going with the business, and 3 years later I’m still working with brands, building and developing their marketing.
