We recently connected with Charlotte Lisa and have shared our conversation below.
Charlotte, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Our company began as an all-encompassing adventure and art project. The name was a way to join our ambitions and approaches to life and our nascent careers. It expresses our beginnings as a team and the beliefs that led us to where we are now – that dreams be taken seriously and be made a part of the waking world, While dreams are the base, we also have the business side in the name and in doing so, create a very ambiguous concept of coordinating what is seemingly impossible to share: the internal workings and processes of our minds as present in our dreams. And this we do officially, as an office. The Dream Coordination Office.
Charlotte, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Dream Coordination Office is a collaborative business project for text-based creative work. We emerged from a poetry, performance, and art installation background to create an office specializing in art translations and editing. We offer our clients readable, contemporary, and engaging German to English translations of challenging texts in the arts, philosophy, and architecture. In addition, we prepare manuscripts for publication, write texts for our clients, and compile our own poetry chapbooks and short story collections.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal driving our creative journey is to follow our dreams and remain true to the idea of integrating the dreaming world and the waking world, that is, looking beyond the border of a seemingly objective reality to include also our own personal realities that play out for each individual in our minds. In our translation, writing, and editing we strive to include the text on the surface as well as the subtexts and various levels at which text can communicate.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Charlotte Eckler and Lisa Rosenblatt met in a group of English speaking poets in Vienna, Austria that had formed after a workshop with the poet Allen Ginsberg. We began performing our poetry together and were eventually joined by a friend on the bass guitar, We gradually moved toward making music as a band. After several years of performances and collaborations, we embarked on a literal journey in the form of a bicycle tour and a life journey of making a living off of our creativity.
