We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charlotte Howard Collins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charlotte below.
Charlotte, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Absolutely, it can be tempting to view a business or industry from the outside and assume profitability is straightforward. However, in the realm of coaching and consulting, one of the biggest challenges to profitability is the inconsistency of income streams. Many entrepreneurs, particularly women, struggle to maintain a steady flow of clients, which can make financial planning difficult.
For example, I once worked with a client who had a thriving coaching practice but faced significant fluctuations in her income. Some months, she would have a full roster of clients, while other months were nearly empty. This inconsistency forced her to constantly hustle for new clients, which took time away from serving her existing ones. It also added stress, making it harder to focus on growth and innovation in her business.
Additionally, factors like market saturation, varying demand for services, and the challenge of scaling can further complicate profitability. It’s a reminder that even in seemingly lucrative industries, the path to sustained success requires strategic planning and adaptability.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the defining moments in my journey that illustrates my resilience occurred during my transition from being a corporate hairstylist to becoming a full-time entrepreneur. When I first decided to leave my hairstyling career, I faced a lot of uncertainty and self-doubt. There were moments when I questioned whether I could truly make this leap and succeed.
Early on, I launched a coaching program, but the initial response was underwhelming. I had invested time and resources, and when I saw few sign-ups, it was disheartening. However, instead of giving up, I chose to dig deeper into understanding my audience’s needs. I listened to their feedback, refined my approach, and adjusted my offerings to better serve them.
Through this process, I also prioritized building a supportive network. I reached out to other entrepreneurs, learned from their experiences, and sought mentorship. This community became invaluable, providing both encouragement and practical insights.
Eventually, my resilience paid off. I successfully launched my updated program, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Not only did I gain clients, but I also built a thriving community of women who were eager to support one another. This experience taught me that setbacks are often setups for growth. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about learning, adapting, and forging ahead with renewed determination.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been building authentic relationships and fostering a strong community. Early in my entrepreneurial journey, I realized that connecting with my audience on a personal level was key to attracting clients.
I focused on sharing my story and the challenges I faced, which resonated with many women entrepreneurs. This transparency helped establish trust and made my audience feel seen and understood. I also prioritized engaging with my followers through social media, responding to comments, and hosting live Q&A sessions, which allowed me to directly address their needs and concerns.
In addition, I leveraged partnerships and collaborations with other entrepreneurs and organizations. By working together on events, webinars, and workshops, we expanded our reach and introduced each other to new audiences. These collaborations not only boosted my visibility but also created a sense of community that attracted more clients.
Lastly, I continually sought feedback from my clients to refine my services and ensure they were meeting their needs. This commitment to improvement not only led to higher client satisfaction but also encouraged word-of-mouth referrals, which have been invaluable for growing my clientele. Overall, nurturing relationships and being responsive to my audience has been at the heart of my client growth strategy.
