We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlise a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charlise, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve been through many situations I don’t completely bring to light. People tell me that I’m mature for my age, but really I was born with the notion of standing up for myself; I just had to get to a point where I could exercise it. Even now, it’s not easy. All my life, I’ve been told I was so strong. Well what happens when the strongest person isn’t strong anymore? I started to believe that having feelings and being in love meant that I was weak, and that I had to keep my woes to myself. I believed that something so beautiful was meant to be a flaw. When really, love is my strongest suit. Love is the answer. I wrote ‘Feel Good’ while I getting over someone who didn’t see my worth. I wasn’t being valued, and I turned my strongest hurt into my strongest strength. The song means so much because I’ve been through many situations where I was undervalued; “Feel Good” was the turning point where I decided that time would be the last.
Charlise, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a R&B/soul artist from San Antonio, Texas. I started writing music and learning instruments at a young age. I create music inspired by some of my experiences & lessons in life to spark feelings in other people that make them feel like life isn’t in vain and to let them know they aren’t alone in how they feel.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want little girls who look like me to see someone who looks like them following her dreams and being herself. I want to prove to my younger self that she can do anything and that’s she unique. Dreams are worth chasing and living. I know the world has seen it all, but there hasn’t been a Charlise- I have a lot to offer and no one can do what I can, how I can.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to turn on music that hits home. When I come up a song, I’m speaking to people who have felt the way I do. Whether it’s about love, pain, or simply feeling good, everyone’s been there. Being able to speak my truth and be heard by those who understand and have been there too is the biggest reward of all.
