We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlie Salas-humara a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charlie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
i wanted to pursue art and music a pretty young age, I would say 16. I became pretty apparent that I wasn’t cut out for normal jobs, which is ironic because if you are a musician or artist, you end up working service jobs which can be both a dreg but also fun socially.

Charlie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Charlie Salas-Humara and I a having been making art seriously, or professionally for about 8 years now. I am a painter who uses abstract and abstract figurative as my medium. I started out mimicking other artist to sort of find my style and hone my craft, but then finding a style my own. All artists steal something from each other, but when you find your specific ” brand” it’s beautiful and revelatory. my favorite is doing large pieces, but it’s hard because most people don’t have the room for them. I started doing visual arts seriously after many years of being a touring musician.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the best way society casn support artists is to fund the arts. More grant money, and more resources for artists so they can grow. Also It’s great when you find someone who has bought their art at box stores and they finally take a dive into a piece done by hand that has taken many hours.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to consistently be creative and expand my art as much as possible. I am not one of those people that can make the same painting twice, but i believe my pieces, even though being different, are still recognizable as my own. My art is based on shards of fleeting memories put back together to create a space.
