We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charley Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charley below.
Alright, Charley thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My Mission when I opened this space was to have a place local artists, creators, healers, and specialists could showcase their talents. I’m an artist and I used to go to local craft fairs. I was amazed by the incredibly talented people I was surrounded by, and I wanted to give us a home. I wanted to open a unique spot where people could shop and honestly say, “this was handcrafted in Myrtle Beach by a local artist!”. And luckily for me, I have a ridiculously supportive, business savvy, and creative family who were ready to jump in with me.
Charley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Two Blondes and a Moon Child is the new concept and second generation of Two Blondes on the Beach, a shop that used to be on Main Street, NMB. We are three generations of woman who came on vacation to the beach about 18 years ago and decided to stay. The first shop was primarily ran by my mother, Kelly, and grandmother, Sheila. This shop is more of a family affair than ever before. I’m in here most days, and I’m also one of the artists, the tarot reader, life coach, and a reiki master. Kelly, my mother and business partner, works in the shop, is an artist, a Birthchart reader. Miranda and Sheila, my aunt and grandmother, help in the shop, are amazing artists, and definitely help keep this place looking gorgeous with their skills with displays. Even my two sons, Phoenix and Lucas have their artwork in the store! We also have 40+ incredibly gifted and unique artisans, tarot readers, reiki and massage therapist, sounds healers, fairy hair and so much more.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
One of the biggest things I am thankful for here, is my tribe and community that we’ve been able to grow in this space. And from the beginning my mantra when it came to this business is, “Community Over Competition!”. And with that one phrase we have thrived. We appreciate our similarities and our differences as people and artist. As practitioners and as specialists. Whenever someone comes into this space, I want them to leave happy. Whether they purchase a necklace I’ve made, or a necklace made by another artist. Whether they have their cards read by me or by Reiki Dan. What matters is the person is getting what they need. And I think that is what has helped to make this space so special. We care about our art, we care about the village we’ve built, and we care about every person who walks in.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I’ve always made art, but it most mostly for myself or friends and family. Same thing with my tarot readings, I only read for people I knew personally. But during the pandemic, like most people, I had to do something to keep my sanity with two young boys at home. So I created, and I found different mediums and then I created some more. I opened up and rediscovered apart of myself I hadn’t had time for in a long time. Then I had a lot of stuff, and I discovered people actually liked what I made. And I’d like to say that’s what started this domino effect that got me here. I’m able to share my art, and my gifts all in one space.
