We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charlette Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charlette below.
Charlette, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
The idea for my books came about while I was doing research. I was trying to create a more obscure children’s alphabet book, but I discovered that those already existed. But while doing my research I found out that many adults could not read or read at or below an eighth-grade level, over 100 million adults in America struggle with reading.
And then I thought back to when I used to teach adult literacy and the students would say that the books, we taught out of were for children or they were boring.
So, I decided to write something that would be a spicy, fun way for them to learn to read. The books are entitled A Ain’t Always For Apple Volume one and volume 2 1/4 and they are available at CharJay.com.
My books are not a cure all for people that struggle with reading, they are meant to pique their interest and start them on their learn to read journey. I break the word down phonetically, I give the definition and I give a scenario of how the word can be used.
My books are strictly for ADULTS, they are also fun and easy to read. And even if you can read, I think you too will learn something!!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Podcaster, and a Author, I am a retired mother of two, grandmother of six. I have always wanted to be an Author and I look at my earlier works and they were not good, but I kept at it.
I feel now I have come into my own and I have created books that are like no others.
My books are unique and there is nothing else out there like them and I feel that if someone is honest with themselves and admit that they cannot read or that they struggle with reading they will appreciate my books for what they are, a sexy learning tool. I would like for people to take these books read them and then go out and read other things. I want this to be a jumping off point for people to say this is why I started reading or this is what helped me start reading.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve been taken by a shady publisher, who took my money and tried to steal my contacts for his personal gain, I’ve had my books taken down by Amazon with no explanation and I have had to find ways to sell my books on my own. And because of the nature of my books, they are not accepted by all the regular book distributors.
All of this has taught me that this process is not easy by any means, it’s so hard to get out there and I have cried many days over this.
It seems like everyone just wants to use you and take your money, and the process, I must say has left me somewhat jaded.
But despite all of that I have kept going and I will keep going until I have reached mainstream America because I feel my books can and will help many people as well as entertain many people.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me when someone tells me that my books have helped them, or they can see how my books will help with the adult illiteracy problem, that is a great feeling.
I love when people tell me how unique my books are, it really amazes me that strangers try and help me because they like my books. And although my books are sexy, I have not had any negative feedback about them,
One other thing is that when writing, creating, making something out of nothing, staring at a blank sheet of paper then getting the words onto the paper, that is the most rewarding aspect of being an Author the finished product.
