We recently connected with Charles Winton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charles, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is to educate the community on Mental health and the importance of taking care of your mental health. I go around the city educating, informing the community the peril of not addressing mental health issues. People believe in taking care of their physical bodies, however, do not feel the same level of concern of regular mental and emotional health. My mission is to inform the community of the importance of not only taking care of your physical health, but your metal and emotional health as weel. When this happens, you can live a well-balanced life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I grew up in the bad part of city, and I only seen two ways out of the neighborhood from whence I came, that is jail or death. I knew then, I wanted something different. Also, I wanted to prove that just because you come from, what other may say, the “bad” part of town, that does not have to dictate your future. So, I made it my mission to give back to my communities so others could see, if he made it out, then so can I.
I decided early that working in a prison would be the best route for me to give back to my community by being a part of the solution rather than sitting on the sideline complaining about the issue. I dedicated 20 years of my professional career working in our local prison. After a while, I then realized that one of the main commonalties I found was inmates coming from broken homes, broken families. I then decided, I wanted to move from the reactive to the proactive stance. I want to start at the root and that is healing broken families.
I went back to school to get my Masters in Marriage and Family therapy to help fix families. My thoughts were if I can help broken families first, it may prevent those kids who are products of these broken families from believing that jail, crime is the only way out. I felt I could do my best work helping families and putting families together. on the front side, rather than at the end.
For this reason, I have opened my own practice where I see couples, families, individuals to walk with them through their stories and help them find hope and healing.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Often times, in the business of therapy, many people feel that it should be Soley based on word of mouth, although this may be true, I took another approach. Having worked in the entertainment industry for some time, I took the same approach in my therapy business. I think my success in marketing in my business is from using the same approach in marketing as I would in entertainment.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I wanted to step out to open my own business, I had no clue of what the first step was in achieving this goal. I sought out collogues who I seen built their practices for assistance and help in pointing me in the right directions on steps to owning my own practice. I was met with opposition and practically no help. As a result, this caused me to overcome the lack of support, and kick into gear to get it done. So, I learned everything on my own and now I can say I am proud of my success because I feel like it was built on my own sweat and labor. It was definitely a learning experience.
