Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charles Tyson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charles , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I think the biggest risk was when I moved to Houston Texas. I’m originally from New Haven Connecticut and at times i use to have a feeling of fear. This fear came from not knowing how my career was gonna go? As an artist, it’s tough to make a name for yourself but sometimes you have to move away from your comfort zone to make things happen. With any risk you take you gave to be smart with it. Never take a risk without thinking about positive and negative outcomes. My purpose was to take my music career and brand to the next level. I wanted to gain new fans and followers and really established my sound as an artist. It feels good to represent TRUSS PRODUCTIONS each and everyday in a new environment. The love always feels amazing and genuine. I would say that things are working out great but I still have a lot of work to do and more places to get to and as long as I keep God first and always Remember my morals, I’ll be the artist that I envision for myself.
Charles , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
One things about me is that I’ve been musically inclined my whole life. My first love in music was the drums, but as time went on I found interest in the trumpet, keys, guitar, bass and now I’m currently learning saxophone. I apply all of these elements when I’m in the production process of my music. I always been a fan of rap but I really took my career serious during my freshman year of college. During my journey, I had to find a independent label that I could build my legacy with and that label was Truss Productions. I knew Truss was gonna be home because I was able to be myself. I was able to put out what I feel and that’s the most important thing as an artist. Truss really cares about my happiness as an artist and its not too many artist that get that privilege. When it comes to my artistry, I give it my all. From the studio to the stage, each and every day I put my best foot forward and even when the outcome ain’t successful, it’s always a learning process. Anytime I do a collaboration I want that that person to feel apart of the record and I want to work as a team. You’ll never catch me being to demanding because you may never know where a idea is going to go. I could do hooks, verses, songwriting, beat making, guitar solos, etc. I think what sets me apart from everyone else is that i always think outside the box when it comes to being original and organic. My goal is to always have a sound that’s not typical because you could never separate yourself by sounding like somebody else.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I feel like happinesses drives my goals during my creative journey. Happiness will always be on my mind because I don’t like to wake up not doing what I love. I wanna wake up every morning knowing that my passion is able to take care of my bills and financial needs. I wanna wake up being able to be stress free in the studio, on tour, doing gigs and Interviews and etc. Even if there is an issue outside of my passion, it’s a lot easier dealing with life rather than dealing with those issues with something I’m not passionate about. Another things that drives my creative process is being able to inspire others to follow they heart. We live in a world to where sometimes people kill dreams or we let someone stop us from doing what we love. Everyone is not going to support you and your decisions about your life, but you gotta start from somewhere. When I’m on stage and I perform, I could see the way my music moves people especially when I have a live band. Nipsey Hussle said it best when he said “the highest human act is to inspire.” It does my heart good when I could inspire anyone because I always get inspiration from people in life.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I had rebuild my audience from scratch. My old Instagram got hacked right before my first headlining show with Truss in Chicago. That was one of the craziest times in my life cause I felt a lot of pressure having to restart. But sometimes a restart ain’t a bad thing. I really value my brand and that’s what this new audience taught me. It really showed me who supports and who don’t. With this new audience, I really had to go in people faces and really interact with them in order for them to believe in my vision and to become a long time supporter. Sometimes I slack on my social media presence but that’s something that I’m trying to get better with. And as far as the numbers go, I’m not where I wanna be but I’m on the right track. It feels good to get back in the thousands organically. A lot of people tend to buy followers because of the perception. I told myself I’m not gonna cheat the grind imma earn my longevity the hard way.
