Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charles Post. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charles, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
One of the biggest trends in sports media over the last few years has been an emphasis on versatility. For decades, the norm was to specialize in one area (broadcast, journalism, marketing, photography, social media, video, etc) and put all of your focus into that. In recent years, it’s become a necessity to have multiple areas of expertise. Most platforms want you to be able to create content in a variety of ways and that made me expand my content. I think this trend has a positive impact on the industry for the most part but the argument could be made that the quality suffers at times because of it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I initially became interested in working in sports media during my senior year of high school and that carried into my freshman year at the University of Toledo, where I started writing for a website that covered basketball and football. It was a great experience and made me realize that it was what I wanted to do for a career. The following year, I transferred to Eastern Michigan University and started writing for the school newspaper The Echo. I was eventually promoted to Sports Editor and that’s when I started to understand the full scope of sports media. My responsibility and workload increased, which helped me grow in many different ways. I had to become much more comfortable being in a leadership role and made relationships that eventually led me to covering Ann Arbor High School athletics for several years. During my time with We Love Ann Arbor, I improved my communication and interview skills. In the years since then, I’ve used my previous experience to become a freelance writer and reporter for multiple sites, and am currently a site manager for Cincy on the Prowl, covering University of Cincinnati athletics. Throughout the years, I’ve gained a lot of different skills including editing, interviewing, photography, podcasting, reporting, social media navigation, website design, writing and more.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was in a very comfortable place in my career prior to the pandemic in 2020 but was forced to pivot due to the shut down. For the latter part of my time at Eastern Michigan University, I was the Sports Editor at The Echo and was a freelance contributor for several outlets covering high school sports. I was learning a lot, making connections in the industry and felt like I was in a great spot going forward. Then the shut down happened and I was out of work for months. It forced me to reset my focus and get a plan together for the years to come. Several months later, I accepted a position with a platform that I was unfamiliar with and the uncertainty was difficult to deal with. It ended up being a great decision though because it eventually led to me moving into the position I currently hold.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I’ve had a couple different managerial roles in recent years, which helped me learn a lot about communicating and relationships within the workplace. It can be difficult to navigate at times but I’ve always tried to be compassionate and understanding while treating everyone equal. If you have a team around you, I think it’s important to make sure everyone is heard and prioritized to the best of your ability.
