We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charles Nelson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charles, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
When it comes to video production, I think Corporate America, and some of the clients I work with, try to sanitize things too much.
Video should be about telling stories and creating emotions. Regardless of the subject or client.
For example, we recently won an award for video production because of the content, more than the quality. Was the quality fine? Absolutely. But the story being told, and the emotion of the person being interviewed is what out it over the top.
Don’t overthink things, let people be human and see where it goes.

Charles, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been in video production since 2008.
I’ve always enjoyed helping people tell their stories. I went to school for film/video, and began my career is a photojournalist for a local news station. I quickly realized the grind of news production wasn’t for me. I like to go at a little slower pace.
I started my own business in 2014 and it has been steadily growing since then.
The reason I started doing this, and the reason I continue to do it, is because of the connections I can help make between my clients, and everyone watching along!
I work with a lot of non-profits, school districts, and businesses. None of them are the same, so we add their unique perspective to each project we make. That’s what keeps me going!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation is based on my openness and reliability. I am honest and upfront with each of my clients. When I can’t provide a service, or it will take longer than desired, I let them know.
Most importantly, we treat each client individually, and never take a cookie cutter approach. We want their voices to come across, not ours. I always say, “You know more about this topic than I do, I am just here to make you look good” And so far, it’s worked!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth. Our output speaks for itself!
