Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charles McCreary. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charles , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The idea for Dank Dad itself could be considered a risk. A black man….in America…openly indulging in Marijuana and promoting his love for being a parent all rolled into one, scary right? So during the pandemic like many, I lost my job. Not funny part, I just got married and that’s just not a good look to come home and tell babe ” I got Fired”. Funny part is we were both elated. I finally got to spend time with my only kid at the time and it was the best thing in the world for both of us. A moth or so passed and she asked the question that started it all….what do you want to do?
Why don’t you just stick with your career in cable, go back to school? That would have been easy, that would have been me doing what I “thought” was right. Instead I decided to mix my love of cannabis and being a dad into one. I chose the happy route. I took the risk of being unapologeticly myself and trying something different. I told her, I’m a Dank Dad, and boom!
A brand wasn’t really the thought when I created an Instagram page and gave it the name DankDad313. I honesty thought I’d be posting cheesy toy videos with my son (6) and occasionally talking about cannabis and its benefits and so forth. It eventually grew into something else that I really didn’t see coming. Dank Dad has a couple of podcast platforms, a couple of t-shirts, and a whole lot of fun!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into the cannabis industry by starting as a packer (packing weed all day) in the backroom of a dispensary. I got into the “influencer”/”brand” ambassador line of work by just being myself. Once I meshed the two together and continued to organically build relationships and a small following, the brand gradually grew.
I think I am most proud of the reputation that the brand has built in such a short time. On the podcast platforms as a host I feel like I’m honest and open with all topics, while keeping my opinion respectful yet informative for the audience.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think being myself and treating everyone with respect has gotten me to where I am in the current market. People from all different walks of life at some point in time interact within the cannabis industry. So treating the plant trimmer with the same amount of respect as the CEO of a cultivation center is big for me. I stick to my morals and stay the same in any situation and I feel like most people that have followed me respect that. I think that being organically myself and trying to be an asset and not a burden has gotten me where I am today.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a key component of Dank Dad, specifically Instagram. I post mainly reels of myself with my children and of myself with cannabis. I’m not the trendy dancing dad, but I do find myself pretty funny and the audience seems to engage consistently. I would say I built the brand of off being relatable to many and not “trying to hard”.
My advice to those just starting would be to use this platform to stay as connected to the audience as possible. Stay consistent in your posting and engagement. That comes with liking content, commenting, and showing other brands love by re-sharing their work.
