Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charles Grays. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Charles thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
First and foremost, family has always been my top priority. Leaving a legacy behind was important to me even before I had children of my own. Now that we have welcomed baby number 2, it is more important than it has ever been to showcase a good work ethic and a strong desire to achieve the American Dream. My business started with my wife being my assistant which lead to a lot exhaustion and frustration at times. This was bitter sweet because although we saved money by keeping the business in the family there was twice the amount of sore muscles from repeatedly setting up/tearing down equipment. The goal has always been for my children to eventually join the business and one day take it over.
Charles , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Charles E. Grays III, the owner and operated of McGrayson Entertainment, LLC. I started DJ’ing small birthday parties in 2018, and decided to form my own DJ/Entertainment business in 2019. I really enjoyed helping people celebrate and connect with one another. Music has always been a powerful tool to bring people together and that is one of the main reasons I decided to grow my business to where it is today. McGrayson Entertainment specializes in providing DJ/MC services for all event types; including weddings, birthday parties, anniversary parties, corporate events, etc. We also provide dancing on the cloud, monograms, up-lights, photo-booth rentals, and dance floor lights. McGrayson consist of three DJ’s, two high energy MC’s, and two comedians that can make any crowd laugh out loud. We are more than just your average DJ company, we pride ourselves on providing a red carpet experience to our clients and their guests. I’m pride to say, we have completed over 300 events since our start. Our goal is to ensure that our clients have a night that they will never forget.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I’m an avid book reader, I typically read two books a month. There are three books that have had the biggest impact on my mindset. “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, “The 4 hour work week”, and “Think and Grow Rich”, have all been influential in helping me navigate the struggles and adversities of running a successful business.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson to unlearn in business for success is the idea that failure is a sign of weakness or incompetence. Failure is actually a necessary part of the learning process and can provide valuable insights and opportunities for growth. By embracing failure as a learning experience rather than a setback, you can become more resilient and innovative in your business endeavors.
