We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charles Byrd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charles below.
Hi Charles, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my cleaning business in October 2020, a time that felt both thrilling and uncertain. At that point in my life, I was deeply immersed in my roles as a teacher and basketball coach. My days were filled with classroom lessons, coaching practices, and the myriad responsibilities that came with shaping young minds and athletes. It was a fulfilling but demanding career, and while I loved the impact I was making, I felt a growing itch to explore new horizons.
Starting my cleaning business during such a transformative period in my life was both exhilarating and daunting. Reflecting on it now, I can’t help but think that starting sooner could have given me more years of insight and experience in the industry. The learning curve was steep, and I found myself grappling with the nuances of business management while juggling my existing responsibilities. If I had embarked on this journey earlier, I would have had more time to refine my strategies, build my client base, and establish a solid reputation.
One key aspect I wish I had addressed sooner was seeking mentorship. Having a seasoned guide would have provided invaluable advice and support, helping me navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship more effectively. A mentor could have accelerated my learning, offered strategic insights, and helped me avoid common pitfalls.
That said, the timing of my business launch was also a period of personal growth and discovery. It forced me to confront challenges head-on and pushed me to develop skills I might not have otherwise. Looking back, I realize that the journey has shaped me in ways I couldn’t have anticipated, and there is value in the timing and experiences I encountered along the way.
In summary, while I wish I had started my business sooner to benefit from more years of insight and to have sought mentorship earlier, I also recognize the unique growth and learning that came from starting when I did. The journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Navigating the Challenges of Callouts in the Early Years
Starting a new business is always a learning curve, and for Legendary Cleaners NC, one of the significant challenges we faced in our first few years was managing callouts and unexpected service requests. These callouts presented unique hurdles as we were building our reputation and striving to provide exceptional service.
The Reality of Early Callouts
In the beginning, our team was relatively small, and our resources were limited. Each callout represented a balancing act between maintaining our scheduled jobs and accommodating the urgent needs of new or existing clients. Early on, this meant that sometimes we had to juggle multiple priorities, which could stretch our resources thin and impact the quality of service we strived to deliver.
Resource Management
One of the main challenges was efficiently managing our resources. With a limited number of staff and equipment, responding to unexpected callouts required careful coordination. We had to make quick decisions about reallocating staff or adjusting schedules to meet the immediate needs of clients without compromising our regular commitments. This often involved late-night or weekend work, which tested our team’s flexibility and stamina.
Improving Systems and Processes
To address these challenges, we had to refine our systems and processes. We invested time in developing a more flexible scheduling system and improved communication protocols to better manage callouts. This included setting up a priority system for urgent requests and establishing clear guidelines for our team on how to handle these situations efficiently. Additionally, we worked on building a more robust team to handle an increasing volume of callouts while maintaining high service standards.
Looking Ahead
Despite the hurdles, these experiences were invaluable in shaping the way we operate today. They taught us resilience and adaptability, and they helped us refine our approach to providing top-notch service. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to learning and evolving, ensuring that we can handle callouts and other challenges with efficiency and professionalism.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A Test of Resilience: Overcoming the Loss of a Key Account
When I decided to leave my full-time teaching career to fully commit to Legendary Cleaners, it was a moment of immense excitement and trepidation. The transition from a steady, predictable job to running my own cleaning business was both thrilling and daunting. I had high hopes and a vision for the future, but the journey was about to test my resolve in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
One of the early and significant challenges I faced was losing a major cleaning account shortly after quitting my teaching job. This particular account had been a cornerstone of my business, providing a steady stream of revenue and a sense of stability. It was a critical piece of the puzzle as I navigated the transition to full-time entrepreneurship.
The Unexpected Loss
The loss came as a blow, just as I was shifting my focus entirely to the business. The client decided to end our contract, which was a shock and a major setback. Suddenly, I was faced with the reality of losing a significant portion of my income while managing the financial strains of fully transitioning to my new career. The timing couldn’t have been worse.
Facing the Challenge
Initially, the news was disheartening. I felt a pang of doubt and anxiety about whether I had made the right decision to leave my stable job. It was a moment of reckoning—one that could have easily led me to reconsider my path. However, I knew that resilience was key to overcoming this obstacle.
I took a step back and assessed the situation. I focused on re-evaluating my business strategy and exploring new opportunities. I reached out to other potential clients, networked more aggressively, and refined my marketing approach. Additionally, I doubled down on improving the quality of service we provided to existing clients to generate positive word-of-mouth referrals.
Turning Adversity into Opportunity
To navigate the financial strain, I adjusted my budget and sought out temporary solutions, including taking on smaller, one-time cleaning jobs to keep cash flow steady. I also leveraged my background in teaching to develop better organizational systems and client communication strategies. This period of hardship became a catalyst for refining my business practices and enhancing our overall service quality.
Rebuilding and Growing
Gradually, the hard work began to pay off. I started to see new client inquiries increase, and we successfully secured new accounts. The process was slow and required patience, but the experience taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance.
Losing that key account was undoubtedly one of the most challenging moments in my journey, but it ultimately strengthened my resolve and shaped the business into what it is today. It pushed me to innovate, improve, and become more resilient in the face of adversity.
The Outcome
Looking back, I’m grateful for the challenge because it forced me to grow in ways I might not have otherwise. The experience taught me that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from setbacks; it’s about using those setbacks as a foundation for building something stronger and more sustainable.
