We recently connected with Charles Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Charles, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Looking back I wish I would have started 2years ago when I was released from prison. I started putting myself out there on reels about a year ago. I was really dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety. At the time I was working at Natural State Recovery in Oak Grove Arkansas. I think if I would have started earlier it would have been more of a healing process for me. My experience with it right now is great I’m still new so it’s still exciting.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born into a family with verbal and physical abuse. My father was an alcoholic and hardly around he would leave for months at a time. This is when I developed most of my childhood trauma. My mother had two children from a previous marriage and they were already in the late teenage years. She worked so much she left my sister to help raise me. I was never much on authority so I would act out. My acting out starting causing trouble with the police and I started getting in trouble and going to jail. So I ended up spending half of my life in prison and jails. I started using meth after doing over a decade in prison numb the feelings I was overwhelmed with that’s when my addiction started. My last bid in prison I lost my mother and it caused me to be at my lowest point so I surrendered my drug addiction to my higher power. That’s what lead me into drug recovery work. My past which use to define me in a negative way now allows me to reach those who have been on a similar path. I also suffer from mental health issues which I believe is the main problem in drug use. I want people to know that I’m just like them now that I don’t get high im still no better then anyone who does we have all been on the same road. I want to motivate people to step forward and release the things that are holding them back and understand it’s ok to be vulnerable and open.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s the response from people that I touch with my reels. The ones who reach out and say how it helped them get through a hard time or even just the day
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Reaching the people who are at the bottom. That they know they are not alone and being able to watch that change people’s lives.
