We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlee Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charlee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I absolutely take vacations. I think they’re just as vital as the time you commit to building your business.
Vacations are not just an opportunity to take time to step away from a desk, but it’s time to invest in yourself. I view them as sacred self-care and self-love rituals. Whether it’s spent alone, or with others, it’s important to take time to recharge, revive, and reconnect the vision with the visionary.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is a Charlee and I’m a full-time digital nomad and freelance creative. My services range from photography, videography, content creation, graphic design, modeling, etc. I’ve also recently gained my teacher certification for yoga that I plan on utilizing through conscious content.
I was always fascinated with cameras since I was young – I remember being at a summer camp in middle school and seeing someone with a camera and asking them if I could see it. They let me take a couple photos on the camera and showed me how to use it. That was the moment I fell in love with photography. I was so drawn to how a simple button could capture a moment in time, forever. Not only that, but I saw it as a way you could show others how you see the world. What you thought was beautiful, worth stopping to take a photo of, how you viewed someone, how you could share these memories with others, it spoke to me. I fell in love with taking portraits right away – it was a way of saying “let me show you just how beautiful you are.” I loved the way it would light up people’s faces. I loved to play with natural light and how I could tell stories with the way I edited photos. I loved how a photo could elicit emotions, elicit nostalgia, even while taking it. I loved how the right photo could take you right back to that exact memory – remind you of the feeling you had when it was taken. These are the same reasons my camera has become my career today. After years of directing people from behind the camera, I started to be drawn to working in front of the camera as well. Since then, I’ve signed with 2 different modeling agencies including Wilhelmina Denver and Bolt Management. Throughout this process I’ve also been creating content for my personal socials. I plan to shift gears to utilize my socials as a platform for conscious content focused on travel, health and wellness, and authenticity, building communities and events for like-minded people.
Ultimately, I aim to connect – Help brands and people connect with their audience, connect with individuals to help bridge the gap between the vision and the audience. I don’t have a specific avenue of work I like to stay in – I love to explore and work with people, brands and projects that I believe in, with the stories I want to help tell in the most authentic and aesthetic manner possible. I love to work outside and play with light and create a nostalgic tone to my work.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think as a creative it’s hard when some people in other professions don’t understand just how much work it takes to be a creative. People tend to think that we just live our dreams and that we’re so lucky. I dont think luck has anything to do with it. We made our choices and decisions that have led us here. We work extremely hard to make this life possible. A lot of us struggle to make it work. But we put in more hours than most people we know and we put in the work to make this our career.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To help shine the light and beauty of this world and this life. To connect. To create authentic content that makes you feel. That makes you happy to be alive. To make you think anything is possible. To promote authenticity. To generate awareness. To support one another. To show love. To inspire.
