We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charity Lane, Ph.D. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charity, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My passion is to create bodies that people are proud of and I was intent on developing a catchy name for my company that would portray that. These types of ideas are typically generated in my sleep – and one super early morning I woke up around 2am with the name – Body Carvers! I was so excited that I couldn’t wait until the next day to make sure it was an available URL, business name in Florida etc, so I hopped on line and bought the URL. No one has asked what the name means, but folks have commented on how cool the name is and that its clear what the intent of it is!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a certified, and highly credentialed, fitness, health, and life coach who has been passionate about empowering people to achieve their goals for over 20 years. I am the founder of BodyCarvers, an IFBB Bikini Pro, a researcher, and I obtained my Ph.D. in Health and Human Performance this year.
I combine my expertise, and scientifically backed applications to help clients achieve optimal fitness, wellness, and life goals using mindset and behavior change methods. I work online and in person with competitors, the general population, and tactical athletes, providing customized and holistic approaches to enhance physiques, manage hormones and stress, prevent injury, and optimize performance.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Active contribution to social media platforms has helped me attract new clients. There are many member groups on Facebook that women join since it’s a safe space for them to ask questions and gain useful information. As a moderator and contributor to several of those groups, I have been able to help educate people while also driving traffic to my business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that tons of cardio and very low calories are the key to attaining a beautiful physique. I grew up in a time and location where very few women lifted weights in the weight room, they mostly performed step aerobics and other forms of cardio, and “diet” foods were the key to being fit. I had the fortune of being invited to work a bodybuilding show where I met some of the greats at the time, including Monica Brant. I was enamored with the competitor’s physiques at that show and made it my mission to change my approach. While it took a while to re-wire the way I thought about attaining a “perfect” physique, I did quickly start training in the weight room and eating carbohydrates. Today, I try to instill in my clients the importance of proper weight training, and adequate nutrition and I use cardio as a tool, not a means to an end.
