Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charity Hill. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Charity, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was stepping away from a steady corporate career to co-found Epic Entertainment Group. At the time, it felt daunting to leave the security of a regular paycheck, benefits, and a clear career trajectory for the unknown of entrepreneurship. However, my co-founder, Steve Sheldon, and I saw a gap in the market—an opportunity to create immersive, large-scale experiences that could redefine live entertainment. We believed in the idea so strongly that we poured everything into it, knowing full well that there were no guarantees.
The first project we took on was monumental: designing and managing a high-profile event with a tight deadline and even tighter resources. It was a make-or-break moment. We worked tirelessly, navigating unforeseen challenges and pulling in all the talent and passion we could muster. In the end, the event was a resounding success, solidifying Epic Entertainment Group’s reputation and proving that the risk had been worth it. That experience taught me that the greatest rewards often come from the boldest risks.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Charity Hill, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Epic Entertainment Group, LLC. – A collective of producers, experiential marketers, creative designers, and technical builders focused on developing, producing and operating live events. Myself and Steve Sheldon co-founded our company in 2016, and have a vast portfolio of clients including Crayola, Hersheypark, Ritz Carlton and Santa Monica Pier.
I grew up entertaining on stage and in front of the camera. I realized early on that I wanted to be the creator of my own entertainment and not the performer of someone else’s. I studied Marketing in college and became one of the founding members of USC Spectrum, an on-campus production company made up of faculty and students who booked and produced all the entertainment coming onto campus. From world-renowned thought-provokers like Iyanla Vanzant to up and coming artists, I found fulfillment in shaping young minds through engaging entertainment. It was then that I realized education could be entertaining. That was really my first taste of being a producer. From there, I went on to work for WET (Water Entertainment Technology) Inc. — the company behind the Bellagio water feature. It was there that I noticed a gap that I would eventually seek to fill; one that married destination attractions and themed entertainment with live immersive events. I honed my skills producing hundreds of large-scale public events in a myriad of genres at the legendary Queen Mary in Long Beach before my business partner and I launched Epic Entertainment Group in 2016.
What sets us apart is our attention to detail and our ability to fully immerse guests in the story we’re telling—whether it’s a spooky haunted maze or an elegant gala. We solve the problem of creating memorable, scalable events for our clients while maintaining a personal touch. What I’m most proud of is our ability to take bold creative ideas and turn them into reality, all while building a supportive and talented team that shares our vision.
The main thing I want people to know about us is that at Epic, we’re not just creating events; we’re creating experiences that inspire, connect, and entertain.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Steve Sheldon and I met while working together on a large-scale event production years before Epic Entertainment Group was even a concept. From day one, we realized we had complementary skills and a shared passion for creating experiences that went beyond the ordinary. I’m more detail-oriented and love diving into logistics, while my partner thrives on big-picture ideas and visionary concepts.
After collaborating on a few projects, we started tossing around the idea of building something of our own—an organization where creativity and client needs could coexist seamlessly. Over countless late nights, brainstorming sessions, and coffee-fueled conversations, Epic Entertainment Group was born. The trust and mutual respect we built during those early projects laid the foundation for our partnership and our company’s success.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of my mentors in storytelling came while I was attending the University of Southern California. Working as a founding member of USC Spectrum, we booked and produced the entertainment series of artists, musicians, poets, and speakers on Campus and one of them was Ice-T. Later I was able to tour Europe with him along with his rock band, Body Count. Being an early adopter of disruption, he taught me that some controversy can be good if it will provoke out-of-the-box thinking. I found it so amusing that he turned his rebel rap persona into a heavy metal movement through storytelling. Being able to enjoy the vantage point of his impact from the stage looking out over a sea of nearly 100,000 people was magnetic. It sparked something in me — the need to become a thought-provoking disrupter in my own way. Equally, growing up in Minneapolis, I had the privilege of working with Prince starting at a young age. Being exposed to such early adopters of disruption has definitely made an impact on how and what I produce from a creative perspective.
A quote that I love and keeps me motivated is: “If you are standing still, you are moving backwards.” I think that we only have this one precious life, and too little time to live it. I have always had this feeling of responsibility to lead the collective whole to connectivity. However big or small, if I can share something that changes the trajectory of where someone is headed, then I am contributing in a positive way to bettering humankind. There are a lot of people in this world, and a lot of experiences left to create. I believe shared experiences are what we will measure life by in the end, so if I am standing still too long, I am missing it.
