We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charisse Piros a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charisse , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My name is Charisse I am a confidence coach. I help women unlock their unleashed potential by helping them increase their confidence. I do this by sharing self-care methods that don’t just include glitter and bath bombs. I really help women find the deeper meaning of what they need. I know what it feels like to have low confidence and helping women find their inner “fierce” sparks me. Confidence is your key to unlocking that inside yourself.
Charisse , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
At the end of 2020, my mother and I decided to start a blog. We talked about this for years and decided it was time to act on our vision. On January 18, 2021, we launched our blog Call Your Sister. Our blog focused on female empowerment, self-care, and relationship advice. The intent was to create a safe space for women to be uplifted and ask the hard questions they are dealing with in life. Since then we have built a following on social media, hosted events, and obtained our LLC. Every week our event “Whiskey + Talk” creates an open dialogue on a new subject while sharing a drink. Topics we have touched on are being a caregiver for a parent, heartbreak, self-care resources, ways to give back to you, hobbies, and empowerment stories. Our tagline “remember, you can always call your sister” is a symbol to our followers or “sisters” that we are not just a brand but are available to mentor if needed. Aside from the blog I am building a non-profit organization, Mental Magicc, and launching a 4 week Confidence Course in 2023.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started the blog, I knew the eventual goal was to quit my FT job with the income from my blog. My first thought was a self-care subscription box. This was in the middle of covid and with social distancing, in place, I thought it was a brilliant idea. I purchased merchandise for the subscription boxes and hired a marketing coach only to realize I didn’t have my branding as concrete as it should be. The idea of a subscription box sounded like a great idea but honestly looking back I was not jazzed about it. I worked on my branding but the idea did not excite me. I was more passionate about self-care, showing women tools and ways to give back to themself. I placed this idea on the back burner as I worked on my blog and my NPO. Six months ago I was attending a networking event on zoom and the host mentioned building a course on a subject you can teach. I said aloud to myself “I can’t teach anything”, but then thought of my own journey with self-care and the advice I have given others. I came up with an idea for a Confidence Course teaching women how to build their confidence and give back to them. Why not use the products I already bought for the subscription boxes? That was six months ago and now the course is almost done for pre-sales! My confidence course unlike my subscription box idea excites me. I didn’t think I would ever be in the position to coach or host a course! You never know where your ideas will take you.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A big lesson I had to unlearn was followers on social media do not equal followers on your website. When I first started all I heard was “you need followers, you need followers”. I did “follow trains”, following other like-minded business owners on Facebook and Instagram, and watched my analytics like a hawk as my follower count went up. I did have traffic to my site but I was disappointed when the numbers on social media did not match my website numbers. It was a revolving door of anxiety until I stopped focusing on the followers and just focused on who was organically interested in my brand. I want this business to be here in 5, 10, 15 years, and more. In order to do that it is a slow growth and going viral overnight is not going to give me the substantial success and true followers I want.
