We were lucky to catch up with Charice Hayes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charice, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
When I started my business at the end of 2011, I was the only employee. My business first started out as a remote business that mainly helped clients improve their English-speaking skills. As anyone can imagine, I wore multiple hats just like any sole proprietor or small business owner. This includes me conducting business operations such as accounting, marketing, strategic decisions, and human resources.
About 7 to 8 months after starting my business, I hired my first employee from a Facebook post. Business operations were still remote. When I conducted the interview, via Skype, I used the traditional interviewing method…ask the typical interview questions and the candidate responds. About a year later, I hired two additional employees, and the process was pretty much the same.
At the end of 2013, business began to expand. The business was no longer operating fully remote. In 2014, I hired 13 employees. I still followed the traditional interviewing process. However, I used a job board for recruiting. Today, with evolving technology and innovation, I conduct my recruiting differently. Job boards such as Indeed have improved in their recruiting process. Networking is also key, and platforms such as LikedIn can help with recruiting. Today, I do not implement the traditional interviewing process. I let the candidates feel comfortable and take a conversation style approach.

Charice, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a business owner and college professor who succeeded through the trials and tribulations of growing up in an urban city and being a teenage mother. I run an educational, consulting, research, and training company and teach business courses. I am known for my business and higher education knowledge. This, along with my upbringing story, allowed others to see the value in me and my contributions.
My business, All 4 One Learning Solutions, helps K-12 principals, parents of school-aged children, colleges, community organizations, and corporations navigate the complexities of improving 21st-century skills, educational skills gap, programs, and instructional design. Helping others succeed was always my destiny.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I grew up in West Baltimore most of my life. I was mainly raised by a single mother. I generally excelled in school. Being a teenage mother, I was still able to graduate from high school with a B average. I went to college and majored in Spanish. My top career goal was to become an interpreter/translator and travel the world. However, I had young children, so I tried my second career goal… teaching. I found out that teaching was my true calling. Over the years, I have taught middle school, high school, and college students.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As mentioned earlier, I was a teenage mom. I faced a lot of obstacles from being such a young mother. However, I did not let that stop me. I finished high school and went to college. I graduated from college with an undergraduate degree. Since then I have earned two more degrees: a graduate degree, and a doctorate. I also became a business owner.
