We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charhonda Crawford a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charhonda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Wow!! Starting my own business was definitely very challenging but I learned a lot about myself and I believe every job I had before becoming a business owner prepared me for this very moment in time. I had to attend Massage school for 18 months, leave my full time job, and miss time with my children to get my foundation firm in the business. If I had to do it all over, I would’ve got a mentor or coach my first year of business. If you are a young professional and you’re considering starting your own business, just start don’t wait
Charhonda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Charhonda is a healer, mother, daughter, entrepreneur , business coach, and author. I started my career by working 2 jobs and building my clientele in the fall of 2019. Some of my biggest accomplishments have been working with the Charlotte Hornets, ProAm, and several celebrities. Many people search for Purely Kneaded Bodywork when they are struggling with pain or trying to recover fully from an injury/ surgery. We are not your everyday spa. We are a clinical spa that has a mission to teach our guest anatomy and physiology so they are able to heal their families. We provide quality services, products, and education that is life changing.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I hired the wrong person one year and almost lost it all. This woman was my assistant and she quit after 30 days for not receiving a raise. She broke into several of my accounts, cyber bullied us, slandered us, threatened us and much more. I couldn’t understand at the time why Allah God was allowing this to happen to us. I now understand that this needed to happen for me to properly learn contracting, hiring, and overall to make manifest how much I’ve changed as a person. Business will not be easy but I was taught by my teacher that all things of value come with a difficulty factor.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would definitely choose the same profession but I would start with hiring others immediately. As a clinical massage therapist that strives to master her craft. I’ve met some wonderful people but they are attached to Charhonda in a way that didn’t allow for growth. I had to slowly slip away from the business.
