We were lucky to catch up with Chardae Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chardae , appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When thinking about branching out on my own, I knew that if I were to ever create my own design company that I would want it to have my name it in somewhere. Many times, you will see that women-owned businesses shy away from having their first names in their company name, as we often times want to appear ambiguous to the public. Because I offer a range of design services, I knew I wanted the company name to present more as a collective so that is how I landed with StudioChardae.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Born and raised in Texas, I knew from an early that I wanted to do something creative. Formed in 2015, by Chardae Adams, Studio Chardae is a Houston and Atlanta based full service design firm that has a unique approach to all things design. At StudioChardae, we specialize in both residential and boutique hospitality interiors, set design for print and film, as well as event design and styling. We craft sophisticated, layered interiors that not only aim to highlight the space, but bring forth our client’s personality in the process.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For many years I worked in design firms as a hospitality interior designer, designing hotels and restaurants, but just like most things during the pandemic all of that work came to a halt. I always had a passion and interest in designing for the big screen, but was not sure how to connect with and build a network within that industry. I was able to use social media and my networking skills to pivot into the film and television industry where I have been able to use my design background to navigate a new sector of design for me. This pivot gave me the courage I needed to fully jump into pursuing my own design studio and taking on clients of my own.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth as well as former colleagues have been the best source of new clients for me. I have found that if you do a good job and have a good reputation, people will remember that and recommend you to their friends, family, associates etc. Additionally, I have always had really great working relationships with colleagues and when these colleagues branch out on their own, I am often times asked to consult on their projects. Consulting has provided me with more experience with various types of clientele as well as given me exposure to different design sectors thus allowing me the opportunity to expand my design offerings.
