We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chanteria Davis & Shameka Josey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chanteria & Shameka, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Shameka and I share similar values when it comes to our business. It is import for us to make sure that we make products that are all inclusive. We make products for everyone men, women and children of all ages, nationalities and all skin types. Originally when we started our brand, we had our family members in mind. There are a couple of members in our families that have sensitive skin and we wanted to make sure they had a product that worked.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Chanteria and I had been researching body butter individually and didn’t know it until we had a conversation at my home one night. When then begin to discuss going into business together to create a product that would work for all skin types. We make organic body butter glaze, body oil, soap, and lotions. We designed our products to lock in moisture as well as soften the skin. We want our fans to know that we make products for everyone. We pride ourselves on everything we make. We make these products with pride. There is nothing we would put out that we don’t test multiple times to make sure it is suitable for everyone. We are proud to have reached our first year in business and are still striving to one day get in stores. We outsource the most organic ingredients, and our body butters are vegan.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
As previously stated, Chanteria and I didn’t know that we each had been thinking about starting a body butter company separately. We started talking one night at my house and realized we had the same vision and goal. We then decided we would join together to create the ultimate body butter brand. She nor I had no idea how to manufacture anything. We began researching things right away. All of our products are handmade, organic, and vegan. We went through countless recipes and textures. We are fortunate to have honest family and friends that tested everything for us from the beginning until we found the right recipe. We’ve definitely learned a lot about formulas, the proper way to manufacture a product, and the proper protocol it takes to do so.
How did you build your audience on social media?
We started out building our audience with family and friends that supported us. We then begin to try to get our products out by sending our products to various influencers. One influencer in particular loved our product so much, she began to tell everyone about it and our audience began building even more. The biggest advice that Shameka and I could give to anyone is to not give up. There will be days when you go live and no one joins but will watch the reply, or there will be days when you won’t get a like, follow, or a share, but the important thing is that you still keep going. The hard work will pay off. Be consistent with your posting and make people aware of your brand. The right people will see it at the right time.
