Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chantell Smyre. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chantell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Omg I wish it would have started sewing sooner. I may have been a master seamstress instead of a beginner by now lol. I used to always DIY my outfits in high school during homecoming week since. Looking back I always had this sense of individuality with fashion when the opportunity was presented, it was all over the place but authentic. On the flip side I’m grateful I started later because sewing takes a great deal of patience I didn’t have before.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I consider myself a jack of all creatives, meaning I can do a little bit of everything on a beginner level creative wise.I launched my brand Foxii & Company in 2020 with hosting PuffnPaint parties in Houston, but now I’m diving into the world of sewing. I didn’t start practicing with the sewing machine until I had my first child and was determined to diy cloth diapers. That didn’t go as planned but it was the leap I needed to start my journey of becoming a seamstress as my main profession. I’ve made simple dresses for my daughter and a few custom garments for birthday parties since then. I’ve gained enough skills to earn the title of a self proclaimed seamstress with the hopes of getting into designing in the future. My main focus currently with Foxii &Co is to get my online clothing boutique up and running by the end of 2023. Along with attending as many local pop up markets this up coming spring/summer.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I don’t have any particular goal except to experience everything that was meant for me in this lifetime. I’m all about growth/evolving and that comes with life experience. I want to teach my children to just go for it by living with that mentality myself. As a creative, my passion are many so putting a box around myself can be limiting and I don’t want that. I want to be about to learn something new while the spark & interest is still there. Switch it up as the chapters changes in my book.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
My time and effort being appreciated and recognized hands down has to be the most rewarding aspect. There are a lot of tedious details when sewing a pattern it can become time consuming and exhausting, so seeing my daughter and others light up after trying on outfits is priceless. That and hearing her cute baby voice asking “mommie you made this” gets me excited every time.
