We were lucky to catch up with Chantele Gray recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chantele , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think in order to be successful you must first believe in yourself and your ability! You have to know that no matter the field you’re pursuing, or how saturated it may be, there’s room for you to succeed and leave your mark because no one can do things the way you do it. We all have a certain flair, pizzazz and gift that is different from others. Let it shine through and watch how you flourish.

Chantele , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Chantele Gray and I’m the owner and operator of Pretty Girl Studios Salon and PGS Cosmetics. We’re located in the Metro Detroit Area. We specialize in healthy hair care maintenance. The services we offer are Silk Press, Relaxers, hair cutting and Hair Coloring services, ponytails, and more. It is our priority to give our guest excellent customer service coupled with a great experience in a warm, inviting, professional and friendly atmosphere. It’s our goal for all of our guest to look and feel like a Pretty Girl when they leave our salon.
We also retail amazing haircare products to assist in maintaining the health of our clients hair and we’ve since launched our own Cosmetics company “PGS Cosmetics”. We currently have Matte Liquid Lipsticks, lipgloss, brow pencils, liquid eyeliner, and mascara. We are adding more products to our brand and are very excited about what’s to come. Remember the name PGS Cosmetics because “It’s what Pretty Girls wear!”
With 23 years of experience as a Licensed Beauty Professional, and 10 years as a Salon owner, I’ve experienced so many of the ebbs and flows of business. To still be standing and thriving after a pandemic is something we are most proud of. It is our joy to beautify our guests and see their confidence and countenance change when they get their hair done and wear one of our Lippies. We look forward to servicing every client and building relationships with each and every one of them.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story that comes to mind of resilience is having a vision of changing my business structure from more of a booth rental salon to a more corporate ran salon was a task. I was fully staffed but knew that the change was gonna cause some staff to want to shift. I went from a fully staffed salon to having one operator stay and then was able to build a new team only for a pandemic to come and cause us to have to start over again with recruiting and getting new staff. One of the things I’ve had to learn is that everyone won’t always understand your vision nor see the benefits but you have to keep pushing and working towards the goal and know that those who it’s for will find you and realize the blessing in being apart of what you’re creating.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
One of the thing I feel that helped me build my reputation is consistency. I was consistent in the details, how I answered the phone, consistent in customer service, consistent with my time management which really has blessed my business. People love the fact that I’m considerate of their time. I was consistent in how I present myself and my brand. You can never go wrong with being consistent.
