We were lucky to catch up with Chantal Marshall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chantal, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started listening to podcasts in 2017 and the first podcast was The Read. I didn’t know what a podcast was and since then I’ve just been talking, researching, recording, and repeat. Constantly learning on repeat, and adding in segments taking away segments speaking to other Podcaster’s and watching videos and checking out different platforms. With anything that you do, you want to make sure you want to know how to do it the best way. If you don’t wanna learn how to do it the best way and put the working whether or not someone is seeing or clapping for you then maybe that something you don’t want to do. We all have the resource of You Tube, other creators and books. Podcasting isn’t about popularity for me, it’s about curating how I give information creatively. I want to help people be better as parents, humans in relationships, selfceare and more. The major obstacle in my way of learning more is Time; I wish I had 28 hrs in a day and never got tired.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into podcasting because I had a weird mind and gravitated towards creative people who also helped me through creative discussions. And I was like well maybe the things I talk about on this phone or when we meet up I can do on a mic and that can be the podcast. I started Cozy Womb podcast, then SHE Gets It, which was the first… People started to copy so later I added pod… Then after that Loud Mouf Stereo with Greg, we are 2 podcasters that pod together on Stereo App. We have loyal listeners and I found Dungeon on Stereo App, we created The Real Relationship Rapport. After that podcast, a book club idea with two of my other friends from work came about. The book club podcast is called So What Page We On Bih on the show we pick a book each season to read and talk about with adulting changes in our lives. In the middle of that my oldest daughter wanted to do a podcast so we create a Girls Love. Getting bored with the same discussions of relationships, work, Adulting, I just wanted to get back into my fashion bag. So about three months ago I created Wear It Right with Chan and that’s on Spotify. So with all of these, I stay busy, fulfilled and meet people digitally. I appreciate all my listeners and supporters. My goal is to make the things I love doing fund my life for my family. We miss out on joy and happiness living other peoples dreams.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing your ideas, become tangible. In my case, having a thought, doing the work recording and giving it to the public for the people who connect with it to find it. Enjoying the weird things I think of is invigorating!!!! I think Podcast is such an easy way to deliver information that needs to be respected in the sense of bring your authentic self. There is also a responsibility factor in speaking on a mic to complete strangers. Know what your speaking on, give good advice and be honest. To be a great creative stay in learning mode always.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience is hard if you do not wanna do the work, but if you want to do the work, it’s fine and it’s interesting. When I started building my audience for Cozy Womb podcast, I was sharing my podcast on Twitter, aka “X” app at midnight I will share at least 20 links of different episodes on Twitter and I was gaining followers like crazy. Internationally there were people listening to the podcast that I did not know. I had a great following on instagram on Cozy Womb podcast page and SHE gets it pid page; then I got hacked. Instagram is no help when you get hacked. Marketing was one of my majors in college, I put it to work. I post on IG, Twitter, Stereo, Tik Tok and my personal group chats. Tik Tok grows your following faster than any other platform just be unique. Word of mouth is okay with restaurants and barbershops but even they take advantage of content creators. Be ready to use Canva, great marketing ideas on there. A real life saver!!! Collaborating with other podcasters help grow your audience too.
