We were lucky to catch up with Chantae Cann recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chantae, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My first dollar earned as a creative was recording background vocals for would renown, jazz singer, Maysa Leak. I didn’t know at the time who she was, but I was quickly enlightened about her international superstar status. It was Ronnie Garrett who heard me singing at church one day and decided to put me to work! I also went to high school with his daughter so that was another cool connection. That was my first paid studio session, and there were many more to follow. Ronnie, who was also MD-ing for Tyler Perry at the time had a HUGE impact on my artistry and gave me the courage and confidence to keep going. I am forever indebted to him because of this opportunity! It gave me a blueprint to know that this is how a studio session is supposed to be.

Chantae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a jazz/soul singer songwriter based in Atlanta, GA. I’ve been in love with music since as early I can remember. My mom was my music teacher in elementary school, so I was surrounded by it 24/7. I started singing in the children’s choir and then transitioned into singing with teens and adults. Then I went from just singing to actually leading and teaching. Every place I made music, I also made community, and was able to connect with some really amazing musicians and producers along the way. Eventually I started singing at open mics in Atlanta, which led me to some really cool collabs with other ATL based artists. One of my first big breaks was getting the opportunity to sing as a background vocalist for India.Aire. That eventually led me to being a solo artist as well as releasing my own music. I’ve since started my own vocal caching company, that specializes in helping industry creatives to find their rhythm!
I’m most proud of my third studio album, Rhythm + Revelation Vol, that just dropped! I am also proud of a my most recent “passion project” documentary, Beautiful Brave: A Huntington’s Disease Awareness Film. My goal is to bring awareness, as well as, raise proceeds for those affected by the life altering impact of Huntington’s Disease, as I share my own personal connection to the cause. This documentary will be distributed by Buffalo8 and is slated to release by the end of 2024. Stay tuned!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is getting to witness the impact of my artistry 1st hand. Whether an artist expresses that they’ve connected to my music in a way that has been life-changing for them, or being pleasantly surprised when I listen to the radio and can hear my direct influence, especially among the new generation of creatives. It’s always an honor!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
This right here is for everyone, not just creatives. I had to divorce myself from the fallacy of:
“If I am a great person, and always on my best behavior, my life will be easy and everyone will love me.”
Couldn’t be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, it’s quite the opposite!
