We recently connected with Chansey Augustine and have shared our conversation below.
Chansey , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
Prior to Covid I was a Train Attendant. After Covid arrived I decided to leave my job to pursue photography. I’ve always loved the art of photography never liked having photos taken of me haha but loved taking them. I decided to do free graduation photo shoots within the New Orleans area. One of my graduates decided to have a sports themed photo shoot and after that photo shoot a light bulb went off. Sports photography is my passion!

Chansey , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Chansey Augustine a sports photographer rooted in New Orleans, yet through persistence and authentic relationships I have garnered opportunities to shoot and distribute content for some of the most talented youth and adult athletes across the country.
My commitment to sports is inseparable from family. I developed my passion and deep understanding of athletics during my childhood as my late father would sit and explain the sporting events. Authentic relationship building has and will continue to be the center of my photography and editing career. I dedicate my nights and weekends to attend, photograph, and edit media at athletic events in the state of Louisiana. My commitment to media has led me to opportunities with Showtime Sports, AP Sports/News, New Orleans Saints/Pelicans, NCAA Mens Final Four, Wilson Basketball/Football, LSU Football and Men’s Basketball, Atlanta Dream, New York Liberty, All the Smoke Podcast, and Iverson Roundball Classic.
Working alongside such local and national examples of excellence has propelled my dedication to quality, growth and honing my editing and photography skills. While on assignment at different sporting events, I have managed to produce media for both the most acclaimed youth athletes and as well as up-and-coming stars. I fundamentally believe in innovation and advocacy, and it was my photos of Raven Johnson, the first female participant at the Iverson Classic, that were featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Sports Illustrated and most recent the New York Times.
My art speaks the language of empowerment and pride for existence – both mine and yours. It celebrates athletics, culture, and the world around us.

Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I lost my father last year losing him has definitely become my why. My dad taught me everything about sports so photographing these athletes definitely keeps me close to him.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I was able to shoot my 1st WNBA player in the beginning of my career. After the shoot was completed I asked her if she liked the photos she told me no haha. I was absolutely pissed haha but then I realized instead of doing what i wanted to do. I should have asked her what she was looking for what she wanted. Now before each shoot I ask the subject what it is that they want.
