We recently connected with Chaneya Joyner and have shared our conversation below.
Chaneya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I think there are two separate moments that come to mind when I think of taking a risk. The first is getting in to blogging sharing content on social media in 2017. I’ve always loved clothing and fashion and waited a long time to just take that leap. Sharing yourself on the internet is a super vulnerable thing because you’re opening yourself up to comments and criticism from complete strangers. Luckily it has only been a rewarding thing in my life and a fun outlet for me, a complete 180 from my 9-5.
Speaking of my 9-5 I think a “risk” I’ve taken is applying for an open position that I didn’t think wasn’t possible for a few more years. I always knew I wanted this position and made it very known to my manager. It just so happened that the position opened up and I decided to throw my name in the hat. I figured I wouldn’t get it due to getting a promotion 3 months prior but it would give me a chance to let them know how much I was interested in the position and also work on my interview answers. I was caught off guard when the position was offered to me but elated that they knew I could handle it and give me the opportunity to grow.

Chaneya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I think fashion blogging speaks with for itself so I’ll talk more about my 9-5. I work as a billing supervisor for an elevator company; I never saw this job in my path at all! If I’m being honest I has wanted to leave my previous job for several reasons and this job sort of fell in my lap. I didn’t have any prior knowledge to construction billing but they said I just fit the criteria of what they were looking for. There were and still are a lot of learning curves when it comes to the business and communicating with different people and personalities but I think it’s going well so far. I’m really proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in my 3 years at this company. I know there are so many opportunities for growth and with the connections I’ve made I know I’ll have support along the way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding part of doing anything creative is when you get just one message from someone that says, “I love your content!,” “I tried this product because of you and love it.” Just knowing that you have people that support what you’re doing and genuinely enjoy following you for what you have to offer.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I think the one thing that I always have to remind myself is to not compare what I’m doing or how I’m doing with anyone else. This can happen when you see other people growing quickly and seeing instant “success.”You are your own person on your own path and everyone’s paths look different. It’s so easy to fall in that trap of looking around at what everyone else is doing and feeling behind but I always look at all of the amazing opportunities I’ve had and what I’ve been able to accomplish. Whenever I start to get in a rut I look back on previous things I’ve done to remind myself I am doing a good job and that’s enough for me.
