We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chanelle Novosey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chanelle, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My First YouTube check was $38 and I was more excited about that check than any other check that I’ve ever received! Ever since I was a child, I have been creating art through various different mediums, whether it be painting, drawing, sewing or taking things apart and reassembling them I’ve always been into crafting.
I started my YouTube DIY channel back in May 2015. I was making a tufted headboard for my bedroom and my niece said “Hey, you should record yourself making that and put it on YouTube and see what happens.” So, did! Lol… not thinking much of it. But I made my first DIY video showcasing me making a beautiful tufted headboard. And my channel instantly grew! I got so many views and I began to gain subscribers like crazy!
So… I made another DIY, this time taking an old sparkly party dress and crafting it into a lamp shade, again another hit on YouTube channel. I was sold on becoming a serious YouTuber lol so I worked super hard to create 2-4 videos per week on my channel.
After three months, I had over 5,000+ subscribers but still no money was coming in. I remember going to my mailbox and I got a letter from Google and long and behold there was a check for $38.61! I was over the moon! It felt so good to be rewarded for my creativity.
I continued to grow my channel through different content creations and now I have almost 100,000 subscribers and over 6 million + views on my YouTube Channel!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Chanelle Novosey, I am an artist at heart, I paint, draw, cook and I love to craft. I have a YouTube channel that shows people how to create items for their weddings, birthday parties or any celebratory events with affordable items. I also have a home fragrance candle shop called Chanelle Novosey Candles and I sell all natural soy wax candles, essential oil incenses, dessert candles and custom card boxes.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is getting amazing feedback from my customers! When they tell me about how they loved my DIYs and it saved them so much money… it makes my heart smile!
When I hear my candle customers talk about how they love my clean burning candles and how my incenses burn so clean and doesn’t irritate their nose from sinuses it’s so rewarding! Helping people is my reward.
