We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chanel Robe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
In my early 20s, I was a people-pleasing project management consultant who worked with corporate companies. I loved people and believed in providing the best client experiences and results possible. These qualities eventually led to me burning out twice. The first time happened during my first major client project.
We worked 18-20 hour days as we gave our all to get the client results. During that time, I neglected my personal life, health friendships, and family because I was so focused on serving the client. During that project, I could have died as my body quit regulating my temperature properly.
Later, we found out that client team members we thought were on board actually worked to sabotage the project and that the client team wasn’t ready to embrace the future state processes that the project was meant to foster. Eventually, the project failed but I learned 2 very important lessons that became the guiding pillars around what I do in my business and life:
1) Serve others in a way that honors myself and honors them. Stop living a sacrificial life where you live up to everyone’s expectations and meet all their needs while you neglect your needs, desires, and the things and people that are important to you. This is a message I champion from every hilltop. and have built into my business and life.
2) Client success with less effort and stress for both the business owner and client happens when you get proactive about defining what you and your clients need to thrive with ease and set the right expectations and boundaries. This is the work I do with “giver” business owners to help them get client results and maintain relationships and their reputations without sacrificing their quality of life and personal boundaries.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an island girl who loves Jesus, people, giving, and smiling. I’m also a former people-pleaser, 2x burnout survivor speaker, and author. After my second burnout as a project management consultant in corporate, I prayed about what to do. The Lord instructed me to leave my job. I had no backup plan and just three (3) months of savings but I obeyed.
That move of faith eventually sparked a journey that led to the healing of the core issues beneath my people-pleasing and the birth of my first book “In Search of the Pink Flamingo”. Eventually, my business “The Robe Way” was born after I noticed that many “giver” coaches and consultants were overgiving and burning the candles at both ends to serve clients, get results, and maintain their reputation. This way of serving came at the expense of their family life, health, boundaries, and dreams of scaling their businesses and making more impact and income. With my background in project management and organizational change management, I could clearly see the root of the problem: they worked with ill-equipped clients, had unclear paths to results, and gave clients the wrong types of support as they implemented.
My multi-layered passions for “serving in a way that honors you and others” and “providing clients with a great experience that gets them results with ease for you and them” prompted me to do something about it. That’s how my 1:1 3-DAY client success consulting service was born. Today, I work with giver coaches and consultants to tweak and simplify their client delivery process so they guide THE RIGHT CLIENTS along the RIGHT PATH TO RESULTS as they give them the RIGHT SUPPORT that sets them and their clients up for success with less stress and effort.
The thing that sets me apart is that I want both the client and the business owner to win. Therefore, I look at the client delivery process through the eyes of both the client and the business owner. That’s how you eliminate seller’s and buyer’s remorse and create a process that is easy for both the client and business owners so they both get the outcomes they desire with as little time and stress as possible. The business owner gets greater time freedom, a secured reputation, greater confidence as they deliver, business scalability, and a duplicatable process for the business owner as they reap the financial benefits of happy clients – higher client retention and referral rates. While the client gets the results they expect in the time they expect with little stress from a vendor they trust and can refer to their friends.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner after she posted on Facebook that she’d love to have coffee chats with different business owners. I took her up on the offer but only after she agreed that I could drink tea instead of coffee. The day of our call, she turned up with coffee and I bought my tea. It turned out that we had a similar passion for people and working without burning out. She was deeply intrigued by my work and me by hers.
Eventually, I became her client. Shortly after, she became mine. As our relationship blossomed, we identified synergies between our work. Eventually, we established a business partnership that allowed each of us to operate in our zones of genius. Shortly after that, we launched our first collaborative offer: a virtual business retreat that helps our clients understand the heart of the client that is best and easiest to sell/market and deliver their services to.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of clients for me is through client referrals/retention or business collaborations and partnerships. I was deeply moved recently when I hopped on a call with someone who shared that one of my former clients was like “a walking billboard for me” and that’s why he decided to talk to me.
