We were lucky to catch up with Chanel Hopkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
I would definitely have a plan of action/business plan. It took me years to realize how all over the place I was when began getting started. I’ve been in the industry 13 years and it wasn’t until recent years that I realized just how much I was simply winging it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m a beauty industry professional/trainer and my business “The beauty and soul gypsy” is a lifestyle brand. I Offer luxury makeup experiences. My primary service is the beauty and soul experience which includes Tea or Champagne, hordoeuvres a photoshoot and more. I feel like my approach to makeup services sets me apart from most people in the industry. My goal is to ignite confidence that lasts beyond the makeup application/experience. Im proud of my ability to adapt which has created so much more room to grow as an artist and expand my business. Most people know me as fashionista. I love all things surrounding beauty and fashion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding part about being an artist is the consistent opportunities to learn and grow. There are so many ways to create art so learning and teaching new techniques is always a beautiful experience. I love to see the “ah ha” moment that happens when I’m teaching artist new tips and tricks. It’s my contribution to the makeup world.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to keep up with the times in terms of social media being the primary way to reach my target market. I was reluctant to get on some platforms such as Instagram 10 years ago and now that is the most recommended way to gain visibility.
