We recently connected with Chanel Britt and have shared our conversation below.
Chanel , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I were to start my business over today I would most likely plan a more efficient marketing strategy. Having a great and innovating product is wonderful, but spend time planning how you’re going to spread the word outside of your immediate circle. Use social media tools, invest in yourself, invest in the appearance of your product. There aren’t many short cuts on the road to success, and if there are I would avoid taking them. Enjoy the process of growing your business. It feels good to look back and recall all of your sleepless nights, but you made it. Hard work pays off.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For the readers that didn’t read my article in Voyage Baltimore I can tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Chanel Britt. I’m a small local business located in Baltimore, Maryland. I specialize in handcrafted cooking spices. I own a spice and food magazine company in addition to a small food blog. I write articles about all things related to food. I started my spice company 3 years ago at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and I’ve been rolling ever since. I’m a huge foodie with severe food allergies so the food industry is a big part of my life. I can create any spice blend that you can think of from dry rubs to customized blends. Are spices are made in house and take up to a week to create. I love playing in spices and creating unique flavors.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped me build my reputation within my market was the unique experience I provided to my customers. You can not go into your local grocery store and ask for them to create or blend any spice combinations. My customers have the option of having fresh ingredients with no spice filler. The spice industry is tricky and more complicated then the customer would like to believe. My customers (new or old) can always expect that I will get it their order right and I will not stop until I provide you with the flavor profile that you were looking for. I’m not interesting in losing any customers, only gaining new ones. I listen to customer feedback and make changes where necessary.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Starting a business can be extremely difficult with a long list of hidden expenses. The initial capital for my business came from my life partner. He saw my desire to make my mark on the food and spice industry and has supported my dreams every step of the way.
