We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chandi Weber a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chandi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
When I took over Mod Picnic, it was just a two-person operation with a few hundred followers. From the outside, it might seem like our growth happened quickly but in reality, it took consistent effort, creative thinking, and a deep connection with our community to get where we are today.
The early days were anything but easy. I knew that if we wanted to grow, we had to show up in places that mattered. I stayed persistent, always looking for unique ways to market our brand. That included collaborating with local influencers who truly aligned with our vibe, showing up at community events, and hosting social hours that brought people together. We didn’t just promote, we participated.
That community-first approach started to pay off. Bookings increased. Our social media presence grew steadily. Word-of-mouth became a powerful tool. And as the business scaled, so did the team. Today, Mod Picnic has a dedicated crew of 4–5 team members who help set up, design, and execute each picnic event with care and creativity.
Since those early days, we’ve grown our “booked-up” business by 25% year over year, and we continue to expand our social media following and engagement. The journey hasn’t been overnight, it’s been built one connection, one event, and one decision at a time. That middle phase, the part no one talks about? That’s where the real transformation happened.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m the owner of Mod Picnic, a boutique pop-up picnic company dedicated to creating thoughtfully styled, unforgettable experiences. Whether it’s a romantic date, a dreamy proposal, a birthday celebration, or a just-because moment, Mod Picnic transforms ordinary settings into something truly magical.
Each picnic is carefully curated with cozy details, modern aesthetics, and personal touches to reflect the vibe and vision of our clients. We take care of everything, from setup to styling to cleanup, so all you have to do is show up and enjoy. At its heart, Mod Picnic is about slowing down, being present, and making memories that feel as good as they look.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One of the biggest things that helped me build Mod Picnic’s reputation was consistency and genuine community engagement. From the start, I focused on showing up, not just online, but in real life. I made it a point to get involved with local events, collaborate with other small businesses and influencers, and stay active in spaces where our ideal clients were already spending time.
I also put a lot of care into the quality and personalization of each picnic. Clients could see the attention to detail, and that naturally led to word-of-mouth referrals and repeat bookings. Social media also played a huge role, I used it not just to promote, but to connect, share behind-the-scenes moments, and build trust with my audience.
Ultimately, I think people resonated with the heart behind the brand. It’s not just about pretty setups, it’s about creating experiences that feel meaningful and memorable. That intention helped shape a strong, positive reputation in the market

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for Mod Picnic has definitely been Instagram. It’s such a visual platform, which works perfectly for showcasing our styled setups and the overall experience we create. People often discover us through tagged photos, reels, or location-based content, and it gives potential clients a chance to see our work in action before they even reach out.
It’s also been a great space to build trust, by sharing behind-the-scenes content, client testimonials, and interacting directly with our audience, we’ve been able to create a strong sense of connection that naturally leads to bookings.
