We recently connected with Chanda Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Chanda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
The industry standard for a typical golfer has always been privileged white males. Today, we are seeing a shift as many females and minorities are picking up the sport. However, advertisements are highly represented by slim, fit, and young models, which could not be further from what is actually seen on the course. Swing Chic Golf is a brand created by a middle aged African American woman who does not fit the industry standard. When I started this brand I took time to align myself with various golf groups and the biggest complaint I heard from women was the lack of golf clothing that fit their body type, and were stylish without costing a small fortune. Swing Chic Golf offers functional, stylish clothing that is well made and offers something for female golfers of all ages. In order to make this sport more accessible to diverse audiences we have to change how the industry standard “looks” and it starts with clothing that is inviting to women of all ages, shapes and sizes.
Chanda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an educator of almost twenty years but truly an entrepreneur at heart. Years ago, I had founded a private school for children with mild to moderate learning disabilities because I struggled with educational options for my own Autistic son. With my school I addressed a need and provided individualized education based on each child’s medical diagnosis. Although, my school had a great run, I still had a degree in Fashion that I always wanted to put to use. Fast forward to Covid and golf became the “safe, solo sport”. My husband’s urges to join him on the course became so strong that I figured I would finally pick up a club. What is the first thing a woman does-determine the need for a new outfit! And I did not see as many options for me as I did for my husband and Swing Chic Golf was created. In this industry, I have met some genuinely kind people who have helped me navigate and open many doors. Swing Chic Golf can proudly say that we have sponsored our first couple of female collegiate golfers at Savannah State University. We not only hope to sponsor more but be instrumental in introducing this sport to young girls in hopes they will love it and decide to compete one day.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Social Media has been instrumental in helping to build my brand. I spent a lot of time looking for people on the social media platforms that had large followings and a golf presence that aligned with my brand. I wanted real women with real shapes that could be relatable for others. Once found, I reached out to individuals and sent them my products and asked them to tag me. Besides social media, I join golf groups or organizations that have missions that I want to associate with my brand. Finally, I go to as many golf events as I can in order to meet others and make connections.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The best book I have read is actually by Curtis Jackson AKA 50 Cent, Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter. In this book 50 Cent stated that his success is a direct result of his work ethic. Besides, the other principles he introduced-choosing a great team, utilizing social media, etc., his daily schedule was grueling to say the least. It made me question the time I was putting into my brand and it was not enough. Although, I juggle many tasks, I have learned to block time for each and be more efficient and effective.
