We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chance Kittle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chance , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I first graduated from Boise State and moved out to Austin, I set a goal of reaching out to Coaches or Trainers that I looked up to and would set the task of shadowing them no matter where they were in the world. My first year in doing this I was invited out to California by Lester Spellman (arguably the best speed coach in the world) for NFL Combine (this year was year we had Joe Burrow) and Olympic Rugby Training (Men & Women’s). This invitation was for 3 months, I was able to break it up in to two trips.
I went out to California knowing nothing of what I would be doing or how much of an impact this trip would have in my career. I borrowed a car from my grandfather, slept in my car on the practice field or on the floor of Lester’s Apartment for the first month straight. Training in the morning, data analytics at night, and consulting with Jonas Dodoo of England Track and Rugby, and JB Morrin of France Track & Rugby. It was amazing being surrounded by Elite Athletes, like-minded individuals and building a process of speed training that was fairly new to the world.
In this same trip I had a mutual friend that lived in Malibu at the time by the name of Alex Fine. Alex is one of the most sought out celebrity trainers and for a good reason. I slept on his couch, and learned and trained some of the top actors, rappers, and athletes in the world. This trip brought so much diversity to the world of Training that I was accustomed to, and expanded the career path that I thought I would go on.
All it took was a DM and 15-18 hour work days, month of living in a car, but I would not trade that experience for anything.
Chance , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am in the fitness and health industry, the way I liked to word it, is that I am a hyper-glorified trainer. I am the Director of Fitness for a local gym in Austin Texas called Athletic Outcomes. This gym specializes in Functional Fitness – Group Training, Personal Training, Small Group Training, and Physical Therapy. I work in social media for Thursday Boot Company a start-up boot company in New York which funny enough has been a large mover of my clientele as well. I also operate my own Buisness of Consulting and Personal Training (my llc is Future Proof Fitness but I just use my name.)
I have clients list that ranges from Actors, Professional Athletes, Olympic Athletes, CEO’s, Sports teams, and so on. I specialize in strength and conditioning and performance data. When I work with an athlete or a professional team I work in data and analytics. I take all the third party information from team doctors, strength coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapist and so on with the numerical data from GPS systems, Force velocity trackers in the weight room, sleep data, and player self reports to devise and judge injury risks, and performance metrics to improve upon. I then relay the information to the teams or players head strength coaches on what may be missed or can improve.
I got into my industry very young, I was a runner in High School with some of the top runners in the world around me in Montana, and was fortunate enough to be invited to an Olympic camp and interviewed to shadow and be an intern for London Olympics (distance), and came back for Rio Olympics (short sprints). I then went out to California to shadow Lester Spellman and Alex Fine some of the top in their respected industries. From there I met and made a lot of connections and never missed an opportunity that was thrown at me. Brittaney and Pat Cook the Owners of Athletic Outcomes have been my rocks, letting me take on so many endeavors and leaving for long periods of time at times. I do not think I would be in the situation I am today without them.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped personally build my reputation was being present in so many different circles. I never took an opportunity for granted. I made sure to be present and give my all to so many diverse circles, that my reputation in the strength & conditioning world just grew naturally that way. I am also a firm believer in being human, connecting on a basic level is such a powerful thing, at the end of the day we are all human and some days are more difficult than others no matter who you are. Showing that empathic nature to everyone I train or meet is something that I am very proud of.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes 1000x over! I love what I do, I love people! I am proud of every single person I have worked with, it makes it feel like I truly have not worked a single day in my life. Now some of the business and growth pains are there, trust me, but I think what makes it worth it is the people in the industry and the people I work with. There is a story with every person and I think you can learn from anyone, so I view my work as a learning lesson every day.
