We recently connected with Chaeyeon Kim and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chaeyeon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I am currently working on is producing and performing in an AAPI-focused musical concert, taking place on January 22 at Green Room 42 in New York City. This project is significant because it allows me to share stories that have often been presented through limited perspectives, while centering authentic Asian and Asian American voices.
As both producer and performer, I collaborate closely with Asian artists from the New York theatre community to shape the artistic direction of the concert. As a featured performer, I will sing a duet of “A Million Dreams” with Broadway actor Timothy H. Lee (Hadestown, KPOP) and perform material from the Tony Award–recognized musical Maybe Happy Ending. The project emphasizes collective storytelling and community building through music and performance.
This work is meaningful to me because it aims to reach diverse communities and inspire others to create, share their art, and contribute their voices to the world.

Chaeyeon , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a theatre and film actress and producer with a deep passion for bringing authentic Asian and Asian American stories to the stage and screen. My journey began in high school, where I was introduced to musical theatre and successfully auditioned for drama school, igniting a lifelong dedication to storytelling and performance.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of leading roles in several Off-Broadway productions, including Nine Shadows in One Bloom (as Lu), Blue Blind (as Sia), and Five Times in One Night (as Eve). These experiences have allowed me to showcase my versatility and commitment to nuanced, compelling performances. In film, I starred as the lead in A Bra Top, an award-winning independent film that has been recognized at prestigious festivals such as the LA International Cinema Film Festival, Berlin Short Award, Brussels World Film Festival, and Berlin Indie Film Festival. I have also taken lead roles in The Bread and Wine and The Clementine, further establishing my presence in the independent film community.
In addition to acting, I am an active producer, dedicated to creating original projects that amplify underrepresented voices. I have performed in acclaimed cabaret productions, including What’s Been Said Before at 54 Below and The Golden Project at both 54 Below and New York City Center. These varied experiences reflect my commitment to fostering artistic collaboration and expanding representation for Asian artists within the American performing arts landscape.
What truly sets me apart is my unwavering dedication to elevating Asian voices and stories that have historically been marginalized. As both a performer and producer, I strive to create platforms that celebrate cultural diversity, encourage community building, and inspire meaningful dialogue. I am proud to combine artistic excellence with leadership, contributing original and impactful work that enriches the cultural fabric of American theatre and film.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One thing I wish I knew earlier in my creative journey is to stop waiting for opportunities and just start creating. Don’t wait for someone else to hand you a chance—make your own projects and keep building your skills.
Also, find friends who share your passion and create together. It’s way more fun, inspiring, and helps you stay motivated. Having a creative crew around you makes the journey a lot easier and more rewarding.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to elevate authentic Asian and Asian American voices in theatre and film. I am committed to breaking stereotypes, expanding representation, and creating original work that transforms the cultural landscape. My contributions are vital to enriching and diversifying the arts.
