We were lucky to catch up with Chaewon Suh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chaewon, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I know that I would never be a greater parent or even a person as my parents. My father taught me to embrace people, love than hate, and work hard but never forget to give. My mother raised me to be tough and independent. I remember when I was young, she said to me that if I ever get punched, punch back. And then she’ll take care of the rest. I’ve never got punched, fortunately. However, her words made me feel safe and confident whenever I faced any challenges in my life. My parents also had great pride in their jobs. I always admired how passionate they are with what they do and how they managed to keep balance between family and work so successfully. Even though the career path I am taking as filmmaker has no similarity to their career, I learned to focus on what I love and have faith in the path I chose. They also told me that I don’t need to be the best but I must do my best not to leave any regret. The reason I came to America is also not to leave any regret.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I used to work in KPOP video industry. I started as an assistant director in live shows and then eventually directed several live shows and performance videos. I am very good at catching what the client want and collaborate with different people. Since I have much experience working as various position on set, I am able to see the project in many different point of view as a director, which makes me a great collaborator. It’s because I respect and understand other department’s challenges. I specialize in directing but I am also capable of editing, cinematography and photography.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is very rewarding when I meet people who relates to my story. The reason I decided to be a filmmaker is because I also got so much influence from films and TV series I watched when I was young. When I felt myself is different from others, I saw a lot of characters who feel out of place just like I did, and find their on path. It made me comfortable and be proud to be different.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
It might sound too grand but I want to save lives. I want my story and my work to move people and make them feel they are seen. I hope people finds home in my story, respect themselves more and eventually choose to live better life for themselves. I believe film has that kind of power.
