We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chad Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chad, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’d have to say my most recent single/video release was the most meaningful. Not only was it a big deal for me to release another song as a solo artist, but to do it with such a big cause, THE Devil is def my most meaningful project. Released sept 5th on the same day as SUICIDE AWARENESS WEEK began, we intentionally shot the video for the song with that as our goal. And we met so many people who have been touched in one way or another by suicide. The numbers are staggering. And bringing awareness to the main stage has been so rewarding and soul filling. Kyle Smithson directed the video. Eric Torres produced the single. I feel like the message has to get out. And that I was just a vessel. One of many vessels trying to help people who may be in a dark place. Reminding them that happiness and joy or why we are here. And that they both can be inside ourselves. So it was a very meaningful project.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am from a small town in Alabama. And I am a 3rd generation musician. My grandparents had a gospel quartet and my parents were a gospel duo. But country music was the direction I was attracted to. The first album I heard outside of gospel music was Randy Travis. I knew then that country music is where I belonged. Some may remember the WILSON brothers BAND….which was a band that my brother Kyle and I were a part of together. Our first single debuted at #1 and we got to tour the country playing Big stages and with big artist. But with Covid and the industry being turned upside down, we had run our course. I left the group in April of 2021 and released my first single as a solo artist sept 2021
Our family is still strong and supportive. And you never know abojt the future. I get asked about a WBB reunion and of course I am open to anything. Those were the best times of my life
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Simple doesn’t mean easy. There are basic rules to most anything you do. And the goal may seem like it is simple. But simple doesn’t mean easy a lot of the time. I had to learn the value of friendships, had to learn how to craft a song so that it can resonate with the listener, and most of all, I had to learn who I was and how I wanted my brand of music to stand out. Once you find your voice, everything else makes sense. I was late to the party, but I feel like I found my voice. And my songwriting is a reflection of that. Making it in the music business is not easy. However simple it may be
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of music to me is when a fan or even someone I may not know comes up after a show, or sends a message through social media about what my song has meant to them. I feel validated. And I also feel like I give a voice to people who may not have one. A song can resonate on different levels with soneone. And when it touches them in their gut and in their soul, they don’t feel so alone. They realize they are not the only one who feels that way
